Objectives: The annual growth in the population of maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients is accompanied by a trend towards younger age groups among new cases. Despite the escalating mortality risk observed in MHD patients, there remains a dearth of research focused on young and middle-aged individuals in this cohort, leading to a deficiency in specialized predictive instruments for this demographic. This research seeks to explore the critical determinants impacting mortality risk in young and middle-aged MHD patients and to construct a prediction model accordingly.

Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) poses a significant risk following primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) in patients with ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). Magnesium (Mg²⁺) deficiency has been associated with renal dysfunction and cardiovascular diseases, yet its role in CIN development remains unclear. This study represents the first investigation exploring the relationship between Mg²⁺ levels and CIN in this context.

Background: Magnesium (Mg) is essential for plant growth and development and plays critical roles in physiological and biochemical processes. Mg deficiency adversely affects growth of plants by limiting shoot and root development, disturbing the structure and membranes of the grana, reducing photosynthesis efficiency, and lowering net CO assimilation. The MGT (Magnesium transporter) family is responsible for the absorption and transportation of magnesium in plants.

Making Proteins with Electricity.

Rev Physiol Biochem Pharmacol

January 2025

Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland, UK.

Ribosomes use multiple electrical forces to regulate new protein construction, to ensure efficient protein cotranslation, chaperoning, and folding. When these electrical regulatory forces are disrupted as in point charge mutations, specific disease occurs from aberrantly folded proteins. α1 antitrypsin deficiency is perhaps the best-known misfolded protein disease and is covered in some detail.

This study investigates the prevalence of hypomagnesemia in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and examines its association with various metabolic parameters. Conducted as a cross-sectional study at King Saud University, Riyadh, it included 294 Saudi adults aged 25 to 65 years, comprising 119 T2DM patients, 80 prediabetics, and 95 nondiabetic controls. Participants underwent physical examinations, and fasting blood samples were analyzed for glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), lipid profile, and serum magnesium levels.
