Three young children with characteristic fibroblastic tumors are presented. These comprised one case each of congenital fibrosarcoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, and fibrous hamartoma of infancy. Ultrastructural examination in each tumor revealed the presence of a peculiar intracisternal paracrystalline material that exhibited transverse periodicity between 18 and 22 nm. Elongated profiles lying within rough endoplasmic reticulum had a serpigenous outline. It is thought that this material is related to procollagen or its precursors and its presence may signify disorders of fibroblastic proliferation that may occur in fibrous tumors.

Biopsied tissue specimens from 40 cases of classic, atypical classic, endemic, and AIDS-associated Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) were investigated by electron microscopy. To search for ultrastructural differences between non-AIDS-associated KS and AIDS-associated KS, the occurrence of the following 2 ultrastructural abnormalities of the rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum in KS cells was evaluated semi-quantitatively: tubuloreticular structures (TRS) and intracisternal paracrystalline inclusions (IPI). These peculiar structures were found in 23 of the 40 KS cases.

We previously reported that rabbits with quadriplegia, after a single intracisternal injection of gentamicin sulfate, have multiple minute lesions in the white matter of the upper cervical spinal cord and the lower medulla oblongata, most marked at the C2 segment, when light microscopy is used to study the histopathologic changes. Using electron microscopy in the present investigations, we have found that 9 hours after injection of gentamicin sulfate there was marked edema of fibrous astrocytes in the soma and processes of glia limitans. Ribosomes were disarranged.
