A simple and easy reduction of trichloroacetyl compounds following the modification of Appel's reaction protocol, using triphenylphosphine and methanol, afforded the corresponding dichloroacetyl compounds, with the exception of trichloroacetylmorpholine, in yields of 80-98% under very mild experimental conditions. Likewise, when trichloromethyl heterocyclic compounds contain another reactive functional group, the reaction is highly chemoselective giving the dichloromethyl derivative.

Ex vivo expanded human regulatory T cells modify neuroinflammation in a preclinical model of Alzheimer's disease.

Acta Neuropathol Commun

Stanley H. Appel Department of Neurology, Houston Methodist Research Institute, 6560 Fannin Street, Suite ST-802, Houston, TX, 77030, USA.

Background: Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a neuroprotective role by suppressing microglia and macrophage-mediated inflammation and modulating adaptive immune reactions. We previously documented that Treg immunomodulatory mechanisms are compromised in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Ex vivo expansion of Tregs restores and amplifies their immunosuppressive functions in vitro.

About 99 per cent of solar energy is produced through sequences of nuclear reactions that convert hydrogen into helium, starting from the fusion of two protons (the pp chain). The neutrinos emitted by five of these reactions represent a unique probe of the Sun's internal working and, at the same time, offer an intense natural neutrino beam for fundamental physics. Here we report a complete study of the pp chain.

2015 Beers criteria medication review in assisted living facilities.

J Am Assoc Nurse Pract

DocTalker Family Medicine, Vienna, Virginia.

Background And Purpose: The elderly population is expected to double by 2050 with falls and hospitalizations due to adverse drug events having a major effect on health and quality of life. With the release of the revised 2015 American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Beers criteria, usage of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) should be studied to determine their effect on falls and hospitalizations in frail populations such as those in assisted living facilities.

Methods: This quality improvement project used a retrospective chart review on residents from a purposive sample of two assisted living facilities in Northern Virginia.

Alkylidene oxindoles are important functional moieties and building blocks in pharmaceutical and synthetic chemistry. Our interest in biologically active compounds focused our studies on the synthesis of novel oxindoles, bearing on the exocyclic double bond at the C8, CN, and S groups. Extending the potential applications of Appel’s salt, we developed a new synthetic approach by investigating the reactions of C5-substituted 2-oxindoles with 4,5-dichloro-1,2,3-dithiazolium chloride (Appel’s salt) to give original ()-3-(4-chloro-5-1,2,3-dithiazol-5-ylidene)indolin-2-one derivatives, and new 2-mercapto-(2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene)acetonitriles via a dithiazole ring-opening reaction.

Inflammation and oxidative stress are known to increase before labour. Whether gonadal white adipose tissue (gWAT) participates in this process and whether labour-related processes in placental and adipose tissue are altered in obese women is unknown. In our mouse model, lean mice display elevated placental inflammation and oxidative stress towards the end of pregnancy, accompanied by an increased expression of pro-inflammatory factors in gWAT.
