Tritium (H) in natural waters is a powerful tracer of hydrological processes, but its low concentrations require electrolytic enrichment before precise measurements can be made with a liquid scintillation counter. Here, we describe a newly developed, compact tritium enrichment unit which can be used to enrich up to 2L of a water sample. This allows a high enrichment factor (>100) for measuring low H contents of <0.05TU. The TEU uses a small cell (250mL) with automated re-filling and a CO bubbling technique to neutralize the high alkalinity of enriched samples. The enriched residual sample is retrieved from the cell under vacuum by cryogenic distillation at -20°C and the tritium enrichment factor for each sample is accurately determined by measuring pre- and post- enrichment H concentrations with laser spectrometry.

This theme issue collects together papers summarising the conceptual design of the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP). In 2019, the UK government funded the first design stages of a prototype fusion powerplant based on a compact toroidal geometry, called STEP. The primary technical aims of STEP are to produce net energy, to be self-sufficient in tritium fuel and to demonstrate a maintenance regime that would extrapolate to appropriate availability for commercial powerplants.

Ensuring tritium fuel self-sufficiency while maintaining continuous and high-specification fuel flow to the tokamak via a low tritium inventory and controllable fuel cycle is a significant challenge to the STEP plant design. Effective and high-quality fuelling and exhaust design is required to sustain and control a stable plasma, whereas fuel sufficiency is required to prevent depletion of available tritium supply. Concerns regarding the lack of tritium availability preventing continuous tritium import are countered by breeding, where highly energetic neutrons from the core fusion reactions interact with lithium atoms suspended in the surrounding breeder blanket to produce tritium.

The design of a vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy system has been performed to monitor and provide feedback for impurity control in SPARC. The spectrometer, covering a wavelength range of 10-2000 Å through a flat-field configuration with diffraction gratings, incorporates five survey lines of sight. This allows for comprehensive impurity analysis across the core and four divertor regions (inner/outer and upper/lower).

Coat proteins (CP) of the potato virus A virions (PVA) contain partially disordered N-terminal domains, which are necessary for performing vital functions of the virus. Comparative analysis of the structures of coat proteins (CPs) in the intact PVA virions and in the virus particles lacking N-terminal 32 amino acids (PVAΔ32) was carried out in this work based on the tritium planigraphy data. Using atomic-resolution structure of the potato virus Y potyvirus (PVY) protein, which is a homolog of the CP PVA, the available CP surfaces in the PVY virion were calculated and the areas of intersubunit/interhelix contacts were determined.
