We study the poles of the retarded Green's functions of strongly coupled field theories exhibiting a variety of phase structures from a crossover up to a first order phase transition. These theories are modeled by a dual gravitational description. The poles of the holographic Green's functions appear at the frequencies of the quasinormal modes of the dual black hole background. We establish that near the transition, in all cases considered, the applicability of a hydrodynamic description breaks down already at lower momenta than in the conformal case. We establish the appearance of the spinodal region in the case of the first order phase transition at temperatures for which the speed of sound squared is negative. An estimate of the preferential scale attained by the unstable modes is also given. We additionally observe a novel diffusive regime for sound modes for a range of wavelengths.
AbstractThe ability to secure food for offspring and withstand the cost of reproduction favors high-quality mothers that overproduce the larger sex, typically sons, only if they will receive adequate food, as this should enhance these sons' fitness returns. However, high-quality daughters ensure that grandoffspring receive quality parental care and may possess greater reproductive value than their brothers, favoring daughters also from high-quality mothers. Background: Less than one-third of sub-Saharan Africans have access to improved water sources. In US, Indian, and African studies, Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is increased among women with poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). We examined water source, sanitation (latrine type), and rainfall in relation to the vaginal microbiome (VMB).
Objective: The resiliency of patients who have advanced heart failure (HF) and undergo a physical stressor such as heart transplantation or left ventricular assist device implantation has yet to be studied in the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial domains. The primary aim of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility of a multidomain resiliency assessment in patients who have advanced HF and require surgery.
Methods: A battery of assessments in each of the domains was completed at baseline before surgical intervention, after intensive care discharge, and 3 and 6 months after surgery.
SnS holds great promise in optoelectronics, especially in photovoltaic devices, due to its exceptional intrinsic electronic properties and optimal optical absorption. However, its prospective applications are often limited by structural instability or oxidation, leading to internal or external defect states. This study proposes a mixed-phase SnS/h-BN heterostructure to enhance chemical and thermal stability while preserving the intrinsic optoelectronic properties of SnS.
