Muscle glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is described in four clinically heterogeneous patients: an athlete who developed myoglobinuria after physical exercise; a 7-year-old, mildly mentally retarded boy, who had episodes of dark urine and high creatine kinase; and two brothers of Sardinian origin, the elder showing moderate exercise intolerance. Histochemical and biochemical studies showed a lack of G6PD activity in muscle biopsy specimens as well as in erythrocytes. G6PD characterization in erythrocytes classified these mutant enzymes as Mediterranean variant in all the patients. The deficiency was confirmed in the patients' myotubes and skin fibroblasts, where residual activity was present. Electrophoretic studies in tissue culture extracts showed that the residual muscle enzyme migrated as a single electrophoretic band like normal human muscle G6PD.

Meat quality is a complex trait that exhibits significant variation across pig breeds, and the regulatory mechanisms governing pork meat quality are not fully elucidated. We compared the transcriptomics and metabolomics of the longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle between the Songliao Black Pig (SBP) and Large White × Landrace Pig (LWLDP) to investigate breed-specific differences in meat quality and underlying regulatory pathways. The results showed that SBP meat had a higher marbling score and backfat thickness, a richer color, a lower shear force, and reduced drip loss.

Rice-fish farming is an ancient and enduring aquaculture model in China. This study aimed to assess the variations in digestive enzymes, antioxidant properties, glucose metabolism, and nutritional content between reared in paddy fields and ponds. Notably, the levels of amylase and trypsin in from rice paddies were considerably higher compared to those from ponds.

Effects of Flavonoids in on Carcass Traits, Meat Quality and Antioxidant Capacity in Finishing Pigs.

Antioxidants (Basel)

This experiment aimed to explore the effects of flavonoids in (FFAI) on carcass traits, meat quality, and the antioxidant capacity of finishing pigs. The results indicated that the addition of an appropriate amount of FFAI into their diet could significantly reduce the backfat thickness and perirenal fat percentage of finishing pigs, as well as the drip loss, water-holding capacity, shear force, and the levels of lactate, glucose-6-phosphate, glucose, ATP, phosphofructokinase, and pyruvate in the longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle. It also elevated the levels of flavor amino acids such as glutamate, serine, and threonine, and enriched the composition of flavor substances, including benzene and octanal, which significantly contributed to the enhancement of pork flavor.

Objective: 2-Deoxy-2-[F]fluoro-D-glucose ([F]FDG) is widely used for noninvasive imaging of atherosclerosis. However, knowledge about metabolic processes underlying [F]FDG uptake is mostly derived from cell culture studies, which cannot recapitulate the complexities of the plaque microenvironment. Here, we sought to address this gap by mapping of the activity of selected major dehydrogenases involved in glucose metabolism in atherosclerotic plaques.

Activities of energy and carbohydrate metabolism enzymes (cytochrome c oxidase (COX), pyruvate kinase (PK), glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), glycerol 1-phosphate dehydrogenase (G1PDH), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and aldolase) were studied in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss Walb. fish grown in aquaculture in North Ossetia-Alania after introducing a regime with 24-h lighting and night feeding. COX and PK activities in the liver of fish from the experimental group were found to be significantly higher than in control fish, indicating an increase in aerobic ATP synthesis.
