AI Article Synopsis

  • Overweight may increase the risk of psoriasis, with significant odds rising as body mass index (BMI) increases, showing a 32% increase at BMI 27, 43% at BMI 28, and 71% at BMI ≥ 30 for non-smokers.
  • The study analyzed data from 8,752 individuals over 14 years, finding a clear link between weight gain since age 25 and increased psoriasis risk, with up to 90% higher odds in middle age.
  • There was no interaction between overweight and smoking or differences based on sex, suggesting that managing weight could be an important strategy for preventing psoriasis.

Article Abstract

Overweight is a proposed risk factor for psoriasis. How-ever, evidence from prospective studies is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the association be-tween overweight, weight gain and risk of psoriasis, and potential synergism with smoking, within a population-based cohort including 8,752 individuals followed from 1994 up to 2008. There was a 32% increased odds of psoriasis from a body mass index (BMI) of 27 kg/m2, in multi-variable logistic regression analysis, further increasing to 43% at BMI 28 kg/m2, and to 71% at BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 in non-smokers. There was a dose-response association between weight gain from age 25 years, with up to 90% higher odds of psoriasis from middle age, independent of weight category. There was no indication of a synergism between overweight and smoking, and no interaction with sex. Overweight and weight gain represent modifiable risk factors that may be targets for primary prevention of psoriasis.

Fatty Acid Esterification of Octacosanol Attenuates Triglyceride and Cholesterol Synthesis in Mice.

January 2025

Department of Agro-Industry, Faculty of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, Naresuan University, 99 Moo 9, Tha Pho, Phitsanulok 65000, Thailand.

This study aimed to evaluate the cholesterol-regulatory effects of lauric-acid-esterified octacosanol (LEO) and oleic-acid-esterified octacosanol (OEO) compared to their unmodified counterparts and to investigate the underlying mechanisms by partially substituting the fat content in obese C57BL/6J mice induced with a high-fat diet (HFD). Rice bran oil and coconut oil were also investigated as they are rich in oleic acid and lauric acid, respectively. The results showed that all supplemented groups significantly inhibited weight gain induced by the HFD, but the groups treated with esterified octacosanol exhibited a more pronounced effect.

Supraglottoplasty outcomes and peri-operative care in congenital laryngomalacia.

January 2025

Department of Otolaryngology, Robert Debre Hospital, Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris (APHP) and Paris University, 48, Boulevard Sérurier, 75019, Paris, France.

Objectives: This study aimed to identify factors predicting postoperative ICU admission, the need for orotracheal intubation (OTI), and the occurrence of supraglottic stenosis in children undergoing supraglottoplasty for laryngomalacia.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 31 children (Dear Reviewer, we would have greatly preferred to include a larger sample size. However, as you know, this type of management is rare, and we deliberately selected a 7-year period to ensure a minimum of 30 children while avoiding significant differences in management guidelines over time.

Selective breeding is a potent method for developing strains with enhanced traits. This study compared the growth performance and stress responses of the genetically improved Abbassa Nile tilapia strain (G9; GIANT-G9) with a local commercial strain over 12 weeks, followed by exposure to stressors including high ammonia (10 mg TAN/L), elevated temperature (37 °C), and both for three days. The GIANT-G9 showed superior growth, including greater weight gain, final weight, length gain, specific growth rate, and protein efficiency ratio, as well as a lower feed conversion ratio and condition factor compared to the commercial strain.

In mice, naturally occurring and induced mutations in the suppressor of cytokine signaling-2 () gene are associated with a high growth phenotype characterized by rapid post-weaning weight gain and 30-50% heavier mature body weight. In this work, we demonstrate an electroporation-based method of producing knock-out (KO) sheep. Electroporation of dual-guide CRISPR-Cas9 ribonucleoprotein complexes targeting was performed 6 h post-fertilization in sheep zygotes.
