Objective: A proportion of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) show cognitive impairment that is associated with treatment nonresponse and poorer functional recovery. A broader range of cognitive dysfunction has been found to be associated with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and with the presence of psychotic symptoms. Thus far, the effects of psychotic symptoms on the neuropsychological profile of patients with treatment-resistant MDD have not been investigated.

Method: In the present study, 44 treatment-resistant MDD patients with (n = 12) or without (n = 32) psychotic symptoms-based on the Structured Clinical Interview (SCID I)-were compared with regard to their clinical status and performance in a neuropsychological test battery. The neuropsychological test battery assessed verbal skills, processing speed, executive functions and memory functions.

Results: Patients with psychotic TRD displayed lower performance in processing speed than non-psychotic patients. The group differences were not associated with the severity or pervasiveness of depressive symptoms. The duration of depression (from the onset of depressive symptoms) was longer in the group of non-psychotic TRD patients, but no other group differences with respect to sociodemographic characteristics, age at the onset of symptoms or symptom severity were found.

Conclusions: The results imply that among individuals suffering from MDD, patients with the psychotic subtype who are unresponsive to standard pharmacological and psychosocial treatments have an increased vulnerability to cognitive dysfunction in the area of processing speed. Further research with larger sample size is warranted to determine whether these group differences persist after remission.

Quantifying cognitive potential relies on psychometric measures that do not directly reflect cortical activity. While the relationship between cognitive ability and resting state EEG signal dynamics has been extensively studied in children with below-average cognitive performances, there remains a paucity of research focusing on individuals with normal to above-average cognitive functioning. This study aimed to elucidate the resting EEG dynamics in children aged four to 12 years across normal to above-average cognitive potential.

Wireless microwave-to-optical conversion via programmable metasurface without DC supply.

Nat Commun

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves, School of Information Science and Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, China.

Microwave-optical interaction and its effective utilization are vital technologies at the frontier of classical and quantum sciences for communication, sensing, and imaging. Typically, state-of-the-art microwave-to-optical converters are realized by fiber and circuit approaches with multiple processing steps, and external powers are necessary, which leads to many limitations. Here, we propose a programmable metasurface that can achieve direct and high-speed free-space microwave-to-laser conversion.

This study presents an advanced food detection platform that integrates filter-assisted sample preparation (FASP) with a bifunctional linker-based biosensor for on-site detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 as a model case. FASP isolates bacteria from food samples through multi-filter preprocessing, significantly enhancing the specificity, sensitivity, and reproducibility of the subsequent biosensor analysis. This platform can detect E.

Toward a Free-Response Paradigm of Decision-Making in Spiking Neural Networks.

Neural Comput

Institute of Science and Technology for Brain-Inspired Intelligence, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200437, China

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) have attracted significant interest in the development of brain-inspired computing systems due to their energy efficiency and similarities to biological information processing. In contrast to continuous-valued artificial neural networks, which produce results in a single step, SNNs require multiple steps during inference to achieve a desired accuracy level, resulting in a burden in real-time response and energy efficiency. Inspired by the tradeoff between speed and accuracy in human and animal decision-making processes, which exhibit correlations among reaction times, task complexity, and decision confidence, an inquiry emerges regarding how an SNN model can benefit by implementing these attributes.

Objective: Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is effective in treating major depressive disorder (MDD) with childhood trauma, and virtual reality (VR) can further extend its application form. However, the utilization of VR-EMDR in treating MDD with childhood trauma is still in its infancy, and whether it can improve depressive symptoms and traumatic experience remains unknown.

Method: Seventy-two MDD patients were randomly allocated to the intervention group and the wait-list control group on a 1:1 basis.
