In otolaryngology, training often involves simulation in animal specimens, human cadavers, and artificial models to facilitate learning surgical procedures, reducing the time needed to acquire essential skills. Simulated training has become integral to medical education, particularly in microsurgical techniques, such as microlaryngeal surgery. These procedures, also known as phonomicrosurgery, are performed on the vocal folds using microscopic visualization and precision instruments with long shafts and millimetric tips.

Cryopreservation, the preservation of tissues at subzero temperatures, is a mainstay of brain banking that allows for the storage of brain tissue without the use of chemical fixatives. This is particularly important for molecular studies that are incompatible with tissue fixation. However, brain tissue is vulnerable to various forms of damage during the cryopreservation process, in particular due to the phase transition of water from a liquid to a solid state with the formation of ice crystals, which can disrupt cellular morphology.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of amoebiasis, which has been neglected in recent years according to the World Health Organization, in ulcerative colitis patients and investigate the relationship between amoebiasis and ulcerative colitis.
Methods: The study included 150 individuals, including 100 ulcerative colitis patients and 50 healthy individuals without gastrointestinal complaints. The samples collected were first analyzed macroscopically and then using native-Lugol, trichrome staining, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

The multi-enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDHc) links glycolysis to the citric acid cycle and plays vital roles in metabolism, energy production, and cellular signaling. Although all components have been individually characterized, the intact PDHc structure remains unclear, hampering our understanding of its composition and dynamical catalytic mechanisms. Here, we report the in-situ architecture of intact mammalian PDHc by cryo-electron tomography.

The antiparallelly organized α-chitin exhibits greater thermodynamic stability and is more recalcitrant to degradation than its parallel allomorph, β-chitin, thereby impeding the efficient utilization of this natural resource. The processive chitinases usually provide the majority of catalytic potential for chitin biodegradation. Using high-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM), we revealed that the opposite traffic of OfChi-h, the only processive chitinase involved in chitin biodegradation in the insect Ostrinia furnacalis, is a key factor that significantly affects α-chitin degradation.
