Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), arising from nasopharyngeal epithelium is caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It is common in South China, South East Asia and North East India. The aim and objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of EBV in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue sections of clinically suspected NPC patients, correlate the results of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with histopathology findings, and to determine the utility of tissue EBV DNA as a diagnostic bio-marker.

Background: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA quantification in nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is an indicator of the tumour burden, stage and survival. Although EBV dynamics in endemic regions has been extensively studied and reported, the data from non-endemic regions is sparse. This study attempts to investigate the EBV dynamics in NPC patients from a non-endemic region and also to identify the factors impacting the outcomes.

Background: The role of surgery compared with reirradiation in the primary treatment of patients with resectable, locally recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who have previously received radiotherapy is a matter of debate. In this trial, we compared the efficacy and safety outcomes of salvage endoscopic surgery versus intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) in patients with resectable locally recurrent NPC.
Methods: This multicentre, open-label, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial was done in three hospitals in southern China.

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) is a rare malignancy of the salivary gland arising from the parotid in 80% of cases. LEC is indistinguishable histologically from more common non-keratinising undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Up to 40% of patients with primary LEC present with a cervical metastasis and histological assessment of the primary lesion or nodal metastasis may be reported as NPC.
