Published: August 2016

We report an extraordinary acoustic transmission through two layer annuluses made of metal cylinders in air both numerically and experimentally. The effect arises from the enhancement and reconstruction of the incident source induced by different Mie-resonance modes of the annuluses. The proposed system takes advantages of the consistency in the waveform between the input and output waves, the high amplitude amplification of output waves, and the easy adjustment of structure. More interestingly, we investigate the applications of the extraordinary acoustic transmission in the acoustic beam splitter and acoustic concentrator. Our finding should have an impact on ultrasonic applications.

Acoustic metasurface with rationally distributed phase manipulating characteristic provides a promising platform to reshape the wavefront of scattering wave. Such acoustic illusion carpet suffers from limitation of narrow bandwidth and relatively large volume to contain the object to be hidden. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate broadband conformal acoustic illusion coatings composed of subwavelength-thick metacells that are designed by two types of modified Helmholtz resonators with 2π reflection phase.

Ultrasonic scalpels (USs), as the preferred energy instruments, are facing a growing need to exhibit enhanced performance with the diversification of modern surgical challenges. Hence, we proposed an acoustic black hole ultrasonic scalpel (ABHUS) in longitudinal-bending coupled vibration for efficient surgical cutting. By incorporating an acoustic black hole profile, the local bending wave velocity is reduced and the amplitude is amplified cumulatively, thus creating a high-energy region near the blade tip to enhance the cutting performance of the ABHUS.

In dictating the optical processes in metal nanoparticles, for instance, quantum nature of free electrons is significantly dominant and plays very crucial roles at the level of nanoscale dimensions of materials. As consequences of the quantum-confinement effects on the conduction electrons, surface-plasmon resonance induced optical absorption and light emission properties of metal nanoparticles are found to be strongly dependent on physical dimensions of the nanomaterials. In addition, surface-confined acoustic vibration (phonon) modes have been experimentally observed to depend on the sizes of the metal nanoparticles.

Acoustics of bubbles is quite developed field mainly due to multiple cavitation-related ultrasonic applications in liquids. New applications, which require detailed studies of ultrasound encounter with bubble in solid materials, have become apparent recently and are concerned with detectability of porosity in advanced solid materials based on layered technology, like composite and additive manufactured structures. To elucidate the transition from liquids to solids the present paper starts from theoretical similarity between both and proceeds to experimental study of the resonance acoustic effects of air bubbles in epoxy resin.
