This study aims to perform a meta-analysis of randomized studies to evaluate if chest shielding during phototherapy is associated with decreased incidence of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in premature infants.  We used published guidelines for the meta-analysis of clinical trials. The search strategy included electronic searches of CINAHL, CENTRAL Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, PubMed, and abstracts presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies. Inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-RCTs or cluster RCTs published in English and involving chest shielding during phototherapy in premature infants with PDA as an outcome. Exclusion criteria involved case reports, case series, and multiple publications from the same author. Heterogeneity testing using Q statistics was performed to evaluate the variance between studies.  Two RCTs met study criteria. There was heterogeneity (I: 55.4%) between the two trials. Meta-analysis of RCTs using the random effect model demonstrated that chest shielding during phototherapy was associated with decreased incidence of PDA (odds ratio: 0.47, 95% confidence interval: 0.23-0.96). There was no publication bias on Eggers test. Heterogeneity was seen in gestational age, gender, prophylactic use of postnatal indomethacin, duration of phototherapy, and assessment of PDA.  Chest shielding during phototherapy may be associated with decreased incidence of PDA among premature infants.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of spatial scattered radiation during mobile dynamic chest radiography and to develop protective measures.

Methods: We measured the spatial scattered radiation, assuming both mobile chest radiography and mobile dynamic chest radiography. We placed the chest phantom on a stretcher.

The medical community recently endured a heartbreaking tragedy with the brutal rape and murder of a young medical student in Kolkata. The tragic event at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata is particularly distressing. While the reasons behind it may be complex-whether linked to a drug racket, a personal vendetta, or even the accused's questionable history as a womanizer and porn addict-the fact remains that justice appears elusive.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the use and outcomes of P2Y inhibitor pretreatment in patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) in the U.S. from 2013 to 2023.
  • P2Y inhibitor pretreatment rates decreased significantly from 24.8% to 12.4% over the study period, with only 15.9% in a recent cohort showing such treatment.
  • There was notable variability in pretreatment rates among different operators and institutions, with no significant difference in in-hospital mortality between those who received pretreatment and those who did not.

Institute of Radiation Medicine, Fudan University, 2094 Xietu Road, Shanghai 200032, China.

Lead aprons are used to reduce radiation dose to patients. As the distance between the lead apron and the edge of the scan range increases, organ dose is expected to decrease, but with increasing scattered radiation dose in the body. By simulation, this work aims at estimate whether the organ dose increases due to the scattered radiation in the body with lead apron.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assesses how effective patient shielding is at reducing fetal radiation exposure during computed tomography pulmonary angiography, using a phantom model with a prosthetic pregnancy belly.
  • Different CT scanners were tested, and results showed that shielding can significantly reduce fetal absorbed radiation dose with some scanners, decreasing exposure by 3.9% to 39.4%.
  • However, in some cases, like with the GE Optima scanner, the shielding actually increased fetal dose by 100%, highlighting that the impact varies based on the specific scanner used.
