Ion transfer voltammetry is used to estimate the acid dissociation constants Ka1 and Ka2 of the mono- and diprotonated forms of the biguanide drugs metformin (MF), phenformin (PF), and 1-phenylbiguanide (PB) in an aqueous solution. Measurements gave the pKa1 values for MFH(+), PFH(+), and PBH(+) characterizing the basicity of MF, PF, and PB, which are significantly higher than those reported in the literature. As a result, the monoprotonated forms of these biguanides should prevail in a considerably broader range of pH 1-15 (MFH(+), PFH(+)) and 2-13 (PBH(+)). DFT calculations with solvent correction were performed for possible tautomeric forms of neutral, monoprotonated, and diprotonated species. Extreme basicity of all drugs is confirmed by DFT calculations of pKa1 for the most stable tautomers of the neutral and protonated forms with explicit water molecules in the first solvation sphere included.

We report a bithiophene-based fluorescence probe BDT (2,2'-(((1 E, 1'E)-[2,2'-bithiophene]-5,5'-diylbis(methaneylylidene))bis(azaneylylidene))bis(4-(tert-butyl)phenol)) for recognizing ClO. BDT selectively responded to ClO, leading to a blue fluorescence enhancement in a mixture of DMF/HEPES buffer (9:1, v/v). Importantly, BDT showed an ultrafast response (within 1 s) to ClO among the fluorescent turn-on chemosensors based on bithiophene.

This research utilizes density functional theory to investigate the ground and excited-state properties of a new series of organic dyes with D-π-A configurations (D1-D6) for their potential application in dye-sensitized solar cells. The study focuses on modifying these dyes using various functional groups as π-bridges to optimize their electronic properties and improve their efficiency as sensitizers in DSSCs. The frontier molecular orbitals (HOMO and LUMO) were analysed to evaluate electron transfer properties.

Understanding and effectively controlling molecular conformational changes are essential for developing responsive and dynamic molecular systems. Here, we report that an oriented external electric field (OEEF) is an effective catalyst for the cis-trans isomerization of stiff-stilbene, a key component of overcrowded alkene-based rotary motors. This reversible isomerization occurs under ambient conditions, is free from side reactions, and has been verified using ultraperformance liquid chromatography and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy.

Despite tremendous progress of dienamine catalysis along with its application in enantioselective synthesis over nearly two decades, certain limitations, especially with respect to the regioselectivity in the dienamine generation step, continue to persist. To overcome these shortcomings of classical dienamine catalysis, we now introduce the concept of alkoxy-directed dienamine catalysis and apply it to the enantioselective arene construction by desymmetrizing -enediones through [4 + 2]-cycloaddition. Catalyzed by a diphenylprolinol silyl ether, this reaction utilizes γ-alkoxy α,β-unsaturated aldehydes as the substrate and proceeds in a highly regioselective fashion through the intermediacy of δ-alkoxy dienamine.

Lithium-tellurium (Li-Te) batteries are gaining attention as a promising next-generation energy storage system due to their superior electrical conductivity and high volumetric capacity compared to sulfur and selenium. Tellurium's unique properties, such as suitable redox potential, excellent conductivity, high volumetric capacity, and greatest stability, position it as a strong candidate for negative electrode materials. This study explores the potential of metal tellurides, specifically CuTe and FeTe monolayers, as effective tellurium host materials, leveraging their polar interactions with lithium polytellurides.
