BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the variety of plasma contents of membrane glycolipids in 65 gastrointestinal tumors and 31 transplant hepatomas in mice. MATERIAL AND METHODS The experimental model was a transplantable murine hepatoma. Experimental mice were divided into 3 groups. RESULTS The LSA and TSA content in the 2 groups were significantly difference (p<0.01), and were significantly lower in the therapeutic group than in the control group (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that membrane glycolipids index LSA and TSA are sensitive markers in gastrointestinal tumors. In the transplanted hepatomas in mice, they may be considered as ancillary indicators for judging the therapeutic effect of hepatoma.

Dipole Potential of Monolayers with Biologically Relevant Lipid Compositions.

The membrane dipole potential that arises from the interfacial water and constitutive dipolar groups of lipid molecules modulates the interaction of amphiphiles and proteins with membranes. Consequently, its determination for lipid mixtures resembling the existing diversity in biological membranes is very relevant. In this work, the dipole potentials of monolayers, formed at the air-water interface, from pure or mixed lipids (1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl--glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC), 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl--glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (POPE), 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl--glycero-3-phosphatidyserine (POPS), sphingomyelin (SpM) and cholesterol) were measured and correlated with the mean area per lipid.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains a significant therapeutic challenge due to its unresponsiveness to hormone and HER2-targeted treatments. This study investigated the potential of acetylated globotetraose (Ac-Gb4) as a novel therapeutic approach targeting glycolipid-mediated signaling in breast cancer cells. We synthesized acetylated globotetraose (Gb4) to enhance its membrane permeability while preserving its biological recognition properties.

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs), ricin, and many other biological toxins are called AB toxins possessing heterogeneous A and B subunits. We propose herein a quick and safe sensing approach to AB toxins based on their unique quaternary structures. The proposed approach utilizes IgG antibodies against their A-subunits in combination with those human cell-membrane glycolipids that act as the natural ligands of B-subunits.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) caused by placental dysfunctions leads to fetal growth defects. Maternal microbiome and its metabolites have been reported to promote placental development. Milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) is known for its diverse bioactive functions, while the effects of gestational MFGM supplementation on the maternal gut microbiota, placental efficiency, and fetal development remained unclear.

The human voltage-gated proton channel (H1) provides an efficient proton extrusion pathway from the cytoplasm contributing to the intracellular pH regulation and the oxidative burst. Although its pharmacological inhibition was previously shown to induce cell death in various cell types, no such effects have been examined in polarized macrophages albeit H1 was suggested to play important roles in these cells. This study highlights that 5-chloro-2-guanidinobenzimidazole (ClGBI), the most widely applied H1 inhibitor, reduces the viability of human THP-1-derived polarized macrophages at biologically relevant doses with M1 macrophages being the most, and M2 cells the least sensitive to this compound.
