At the moment the root mean square roughness (R) is the most commonly used parameter for quantitative description of surface properties. However, this parameter has one main disadvantage: for its calculation only height variations of surface profile are used which are then represented by a single number. To eliminate this restriction authors of the paper have developed a surface analysis method which is based on roughness calculation in the function of gradually increasing dimensions of a sampling area. By setting proper measurement parameters and further data processing, from R dependence on sampling area plot size there is a possibility to obtain more useful, additional information about specific surface properties than using the single roughness value. Roughness area dependence plots, obtained from AFM images, were analyzed to study the influence of different growth parameters on surface properties of GaN layers and AlGaN/GaN heterostructures grown on sapphire and silicon substrates by Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOVPE) epitaxy. Although the method was used to characterize the semiconductor material in micrometer range, it can be applied also for any topography imaging technique in wide scale ranges.

The agricultural sector of any country plays a pivotal role in its economy. Irrigation and the provision of appropriate nutrient levels in soil are essential for optimizing plant growth and enhancing crop productivity. To support the increasing need for food due to the growing population worldwide, synthetic fertilizers have been widely used in the agricultural sector.

Achieving ultrahigh permeance and superoleophobicity is crucial for membrane application. Here, we demonstrated that a poly(ionic liquid)/PES hydrogel membrane can achieve dual goals. The high polarity of the ionic liquids induces the water molecules on the membrane surface to be arranged more ordered, as verified by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and advanced femtosecond sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy.

Quantifying changes in the properties of smoke aerosols under varying conditions is important for understanding the health and environmental impacts of exposure to smoke. Smoke composition, aerosol liquid water content, effective density (ρ), and other properties can change significantly as smoke travels through areas under different ambient conditions and over time. During this study, we measured changes in smoke composition and physical properties due to oxidative aging and exposure to humidity.

Background: Implant fixation is often the cornerstone of musculoskeletal surgical procedures performed to provide bony fixation and/or fusion. The aim of this study was to evaluate how different design features and manufacturing methods influence implant osseointegration and mechanical properties associated with fixation in a standardized model in cancellous bone of adult sheep.
Methods: We evaluated the performance of three titanium alloy implants: (A) iFuse-TORQ implant; (B) Fenestrated Sacroiliac Device; and (C) Standard Cancellous Bone Screw in the cancellous bone of the distal femur and proximal tibia in 8 sheep.

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) gaining increasing interest in heterogeneous catalysis owing to their advantageous properties such as superior porosity, high surface area, ample catalytic sites. Their properties can be tailored by varying the metal ions or metal clusters (nodes) and organic linkers. Magnetically active nano core-shell MOF composites are also discovered for easy separation and reuse of catalyst.
