Background: Respiratory insufficiency occurs in 20 % of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) patients, and the duration of mechanical ventilation (MV) ranges widely. We identified predictors of prolonged MV to guide clinical decision-making on tracheostomy.
Methods: We analyzed prospectively collected data from 552 patients with GBS in the context of two clinical trials and three cohort studies in The Netherlands. Potential predictors for prolonged MV, defined as duration of ≥14 days, were considered using crosstabs. Selected predictors were analyzed using Cox regression analysis.
Results: On a total of 150 (27 %) patients requiring MV, 106 (71 %) patients needed prolonged MV. The median duration of MV was 28 days (Interquartile Range [IQR] 12-60 days). The strongest observed predictors of prolonged MV were muscle weakness and axonal degeneration or unexcitable nerves on nerve conduction studies. Patients who are unable to lift the arms from the bed (bilateral Medical Research Council [MRC] of deltoid muscles of 0-2) at 1 week after intubation have an 87 % chance to require prolonged MV versus 69 % in patients who are able to lift the arms from the bed (bilateral MRC of deltoid muscles of 3-10). Patients in this last group who had axonal degeneration or unexcitable nerves on nerve conduction studies also have a 90 % chance to require prolonged MV.
Conclusions: Ventilated GBS patients who are unable to lift the arms from the bed and patients who have axonal degeneration or unexcitable nerves at 1 week are at high risk of prolonged MV, and tracheostomy should be considered in these patients.

Aim: To explore the trajectories of consciousness recovery and prognosis-associated predictors in children with prolonged disorder of consciousness (pDoC).
Method: This single-centre, retrospective, observational cohort involved 134 (87 males, 47 females) children diagnosed with pDoC and hospitalized at the Department of Rehabilitation at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University in China. The median onset age was 30 (interquartile range [IQR] 18-54) months, with onset ages ranging from 3 to 164 months.

Importance: Biomarkers would greatly assist decision-making in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of chronic pain.
Objective: To undertake analytical validation of a sensorimotor cortical biomarker signature for pain consisting of 2 measures: sensorimotor peak alpha frequency (PAF) and corticomotor excitability (CME).
Design, Setting, And Participants: This cohort study at a single center (Neuroscience Research Australia) recruited participants from November 2020 to October 2022 through notices placed online and at universities across Australia.

Purpose: To analyze the incidence and risk factors of postoperative fever (POF) in gastrointestinal cancer (GIC), discuss the influence of POF on short-term clinical outcomes, and predict anastomotic leakage (AL) based on POF characteristics.
Methods: Overall, 1362 patients that underwent radical resection for GIC were retrospectively analyzed. POF was defined as a postoperative temperature ≥38°C during hospitalization.

Objective: Although pegylated interferon α-2b (PEG-IFN α-2b) therapy for chronic hepatitis B has received increasing attention, determining the optimal treatment course remains challenging. This research aimed to develop an efficient model for predicting interferon (IFN) treatment course.
Methods: Patients with chronic hepatitis B, undergoing PEG-IFN α-2b monotherapy or combined with NAs (Nucleoside Analogs), were recruited from January 2018 to December 2023 at Tianjin Third Central Hospital.

Objectives We aim to investigate factors associated with rebleeding and mortality within one month of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) for spontaneous muscle hematoma (SMH) and the impact of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods This retrospective analysis included 33 patients who underwent TAE for SMH at a single center between 2012 and 2022. After 2020, eight of these patients had the COVID-19 infection.
