Background And Aim: Pancreatic cancer exhibits a high level of aggressiveness and is associated with a high mortality rate. The study comprised 50 patients with pancreatic cancer and 50 healthy family members and friends. The main goal is to explore the biomarkers carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9), amylase, procalcitonin (PCT), and interleukin 6 (IL-6), confirm the presence of Escherichia coli infection in the patients' bloodstreams, and evaluate the effect of chronic inflammation on the progression of pancreatic cancer.

Levofloxacin-loaded silicone contact lenses materials for ocular drug delivery.

J Biomater Appl

December 2024

College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, China.

Silicone contact lenses (SCL), as an emerging ocular drug delivery system, achieve controlled drug release. However, the existing drug loading methods have limitations such as low drug uptake, complicated operation process, poor welling rate and transmittance of the lens after drug loading. In this study, an effective microemulsion soaking method was proposed to increase the drug-loading capacity of silicone contact lenses.

A 75-year-old male, hospitalized with back pain, remained hospitalized for tests for unexplained colitis, which was diagnosed as inflammatory bowel disease unclassified and treated with antibiotics and prednisolone, resulting in Clostridioides difficile colitis. Therefore, antibiotics were discontinued, and oral metronidazole treatment was initiated; however, as the patient's fever persisted, blood cultures were performed. An anaerobic bottle of blood culture turned positive the following day.

This comparative study aimed at qualifying a broth microdilution (BMD) assay for phenotypic drug susceptibility testing (pDST) of complex (MTBC) strains for implementation in a routine DST workflow. The assay was developed based on the EUCAST (European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing) reference protocol for determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 14 anti-tuberculous drugs (isoniazid [INH], rifampicin [RIF], ethambutol [EMB], amikacin [AMI], moxifloxacin [MFX], levofloxacin [LFX], bedaquiline [BDQ], clofazimine [CFZ], delamanid [DLM], pretomanid [PA], para-aminosalicylic acid [PAS], linezolid [LZD], ethionamide [ETH], and cycloserine [CS]). Forty MTBC strains with various drug resistance profiles were tested to determine the agreement between MIC results and genotypic drug susceptibility testing (gDST) results derived from whole-genome sequencing (WGS).
