Background: There is a shortage of rapid, accurate, and low-cost assays for diagnosing enteric fever. The dual-path platform for typhoid (DPPT) assay had high accuracy in retrospective studies with banked plasma samples. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the DPPT assay in a prospective study using fingerstick capillary blood.

We examine here the effects of recurrent vaccination and waning immunity on the establishment of an endemic equilibrium in a population. An individual-based model that incorporates memory effects for transmission rate during infection and subsequent immunity is introduced, considering stochasticity at the individual level. By letting the population size going to infinity, we derive a set of equations describing the large scale behavior of the epidemic.

The significance of bound states in the continuum (BICs) lies in their potential for theoretically infinite quality factors. However, their actual quality factors are limited by imperfections in fabrication, which lead to coupling with the radiation continuum. In this study, we present a novel approach to address this issue by introducing a merging BIC regime based on a Lieb lattice.

As nanocrystalline materials exhibit complex disorders, assessment of the local disorder at the nanoscale induced by implanted lattice defects plays a crucial role in understanding the structure-function relationship in these materials. In this report, a comprehensive structural analysis was performed on upconverting nanocrystals (UCNCs) of NaYF/Nd/Yb/Tm, containing varying concentrations of Li to induce deliberate lattice defects. Subsequently, a comprehensive structural analysis of the UCNCs was performed using synchrotron radiation-based high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), high-energy total angle scattering coupled with pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, neutron diffraction (ND) and EXAFS probing.

This article uses the mythological figure of the satyr to examine European attitudes towards incorporating mythical creatures into zoology and, more broadly, to survey attempts to reconcile the relative status of myth modern science. Evidence is used from the past five hundred years to argue for the longevity of these debates, which continue to repeat the same arguments based on the same sources. It is argued that scholars' attitudes towards Ancient civilizations play a significant role in explaining whether they decide to consider the satyr as the product of the imperfect observation of monkeys or as a creature on its own right.
