Electronic address:

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is a major threat to the poultry industry, causing bloodstream and extraintestinal infections. Type II toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems are known to aid bacterial pathogens in adapting to stress, promoting persister cell formation, and enhancing virulence. While type II TA systems have been extensively studied in many pathogens, APEC-derived TAs have received limited attention.

Background: Several genetic and cardiovascular risk factors increase incidence of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Hypertension and the ε4 allele of apolipoprotein E (ApoE) are powerful drivers of cognitive impairment in ADRD. These risk factors are also associated with decreased cerebral blood flow (CBF).

Blood Culture Contamination and Diagnostic Stewardship: From a Clinical Laboratory Quality Monitor to a National Patient Safety Measure.

J Appl Lab Med

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of Laboratory Systems and Response (OLSR), Divsion of Laboratory Systems (DLS), Atlanta, GA, United States.

Laboratory analysis of blood cultures is vital to the accurate and timely diagnosis of bloodstream infections. However, the reliability of the test depends on clinical compliance with standard operating procedures that limit the risk of inconclusive or incorrect results. False-negative blood culture results due to inadequate volumes of blood can result in misdiagnosis, delay therapy, and increase patients' risk of developing or dying from bloodstream infections.
