Evaluation of a Semi-Automated Ultrasound Guidance System for Central Vascular Access.

Bioengineering (Basel)

December 2024

Organ Support and Automation Technologies Group, U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research, Joint Base San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX 78234, USA.

Hemorrhage remains a leading cause of death in both military and civilian trauma settings. Oftentimes, the control and treatment of hemorrhage requires central vascular access and well-trained medical personnel. Automated technology is being developed that can lower the skill threshold for life-saving interventions.

Actinomycetes: A Source of Anticancer Metabolites.

Curr Med Chem

December 2024

Division of Microbiology, Entomology Research Institute, Loyola College, Chennai-600034, Tamil Nadu, India.

Microbes in general, actinomycetes in particular, produce a wide range of antibiotics with various biological activities such as anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antituberculosis and enzyme inhibition. Actinomycetes are filamentous gram-positive bacteria found in both terrestrial and marine environments. Currently, antibiotics such as Rifamycin, Tetracycline, Kanamycin, Neomycin, Streptomycin and Clavulanic acid derived from actinobacteria are highly useful in the medical field.

Background: Ejection seats are designed to be a lifesaving device for aircrew in emergencies. Modern ejection seats are widely prevalent in fighter and bomber aircraft and are occasionally associated with acceleration injury from axial loading (Gz) during the catapult phase of ejection, limb flail injury due to windblast, or parachute landing fall, especially if the ejection is outside of the seat's performance envelope.

Case Report: We present the first known case in the medical literature of a military pilot who survived a low-altitude, high-angulation (>90° of bank angle) ejection where the pilot's ejection seat parachute did not deploy due to contact with the ground before completion of the ejection sequence.

The establishment of an lung perfusion rat model: insights from Jiangxi, China.

J Thorac Dis

November 2024

Department of Thoracic Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, Nanchang, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The shortage of suitable donor lungs presents a significant challenge for lung transplantation, limiting patient access to this critical procedure.
  • Researchers are exploring ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) technology, which evaluates and potentially repairs marginal donor lungs, but further development is needed to fully realize its potential.
  • The Jiangxi team's comprehensive guide on rat EVLP experiments offers a resource for researchers, outlining the setup, procedures, and challenges involved to enhance understanding and experimentation in this field.

Pediatric liver transplant is a lifesaving intervention for children with disparate pathology ranging from single-gene defects to global liver dysfunction and complications from progressive cirrhosis and portal hypertension. The Starzl Network for Excellence in Pediatric Transplantation (SNEPT), a novel learning health system dedicated to pediatric liver transplant, has previously identified practice variability, waitlist mortality, perioperative complications, and inadequate quality initiative implementation as critical barriers that deserve prioritization in the field. This project was a novel partnership between SNEPT and the United Network for Organ Sharing to co-design a pediatric transplant-specific data mart and web portal to systematically map an approach to understanding these barriers and deliver strategies to combat them.
