Smith in Sibthorp et Smith, 1806 is diploid grass with MM genome constitution occurring mainly in Greece. Two morphologically distinct subspecies - Chennaveeraiah, 1960 and (Holzmann ex Boissier) Eig, 1929 are discriminated within , however, genetic and karyotypic bases of their divergence are not fully understood. We used Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with repetitive DNA probes and electrophoretic analysis of gliadins to characterize the genome and karyotype of to assess the level of their genetic diversity and uncover mechanisms leading to radiation of subspecies.

Article Synopsis
  • PacBio long-read sequencing created a detailed chromosome-level genome assembly for the yeast strain Yamadazyma tenuis ATCC 10573.
  • The assembly included 7 chromosomes consistent with the species' electrophoretic karyotype and a 26.5-kb circular mitochondrial genome.
  • The total nuclear genome size was 10.8 Mb, had a GC content of 43%, and contained 5,340 predicted genes.

Three Ogataea minuta var. minuta strains have been deposited as NBRC 0975, NBRC 10402, and NBRC 10746 in the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) Biological Resource Center (NBRC) collection. We investigated the ability to produce secretory proteins and several genotypic and phenotypic characteristics in order to select the best strain for heterologous protein expression.
