Graphene has a range of unique physical properties and could be of use in the development of a variety of electronic, photonic and photovoltaic devices. For most applications, large-area high-quality graphene films are required and chemical vapour deposition (CVD) synthesis of graphene on copper surfaces has been of particular interest due to its simplicity and cost effectiveness. However, the rates of growth for graphene by CVD on copper are less than 0.4 μm s, and therefore the synthesis of large, single-crystal graphene domains takes at least a few hours. Here, we show that single-crystal graphene can be grown on copper foils with a growth rate of 60 μm s. Our high growth rate is achieved by placing the copper foil above an oxide substrate with a gap of ∼15 μm between them. The oxide substrate provides a continuous supply of oxygen to the surface of the copper catalyst during the CVD growth, which significantly lowers the energy barrier to the decomposition of the carbon feedstock and increases the growth rate. With this approach, we are able to grow single-crystal graphene domains with a lateral size of 0.3 mm in just 5 s.

Anion-Responsive π-Conjugated Macrocycles That Form Ordered Structures.

Chem Asian J

January 2025

Ritsumeikan University, Department of Applied Chemistry, College of Life Sciences, 1-1-1 Nojihigashi, 525-8577, Kusatsu, JAPAN.

In this study, anion-responsive π-conjugated macrocycles were synthesized to demonstrate anion-binding and ion-pairing properties along with the ordered structures.  Ion-pairing charge-by-charge assembly of a [1+2]-type complex of a macrocycle as a pseudo π-electronic anion and a countercation was revealed by single-crystal X-ray analysis.  Further, two-dimensional (2D) arrays of the macrocycles bearing alkoxy chains, exhibiting anion-driven disordered structures, were constructed on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).

Regioisomeric π-Extended Nanographene with Long-Lived Phosphorescence Afterglow.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

Organic Chemistry Division, National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL), Dr. Homi Bhabha Road, Pune, 411008, India.

The cutouts of graphene sheets, particularly those with a nonplanar topology, present vast opportunities for advancement. Even a slight deviation from the planar structure can lead to intriguing (chiro)optical features for helically twisted nanographenes. In this context, we introduce two regioisomeric π-extended nanographenes that exhibit distinct excited-state characteristics.

As an environment-friendly material, graphene oxide nanosheet can effectively improve the polishing surface quality of single crystal diamond workpieces. However, the lubricating and chemical effects of graphene oxide nanosheets have an uncertain impact on the polishing material removal rate. In this paper, the graphene oxide-enhanced hybrid slurry was prepared with good stability.

Nanographenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, both finite forms of graphene, are promising organic semiconducting materials because their optoelectronic and magnetic properties can be modulated through precise control of their molecular peripheries. Several atomically precise edge structures have been prepared by bottom-up synthesis; however, no systematic elucidation of these edge topologies at the molecular level has been reported. Herein, we describe rationally designed modular syntheses of isomeric dibenzoixenes with diverse molecular peripheries, including cove, zigzag, bay, fjord, and gulf structured.

In this work, 11-indeno[1,2-]quinoxalin-11-one (IQ), 7-nitro-11-indeno[1,2-]quinoxalin-11-one (NIQ), and 7-chloro-11-indeno[1,2-]quinoxalin-11-one (CIQ) as indenoquinoxalines (IQPs) and 7-nitro-2'-(4-nitrophenyl)-5',6',7',7a'-tetrahydrospiro[indeno[1,2-]quinoxaline-11,3'-pyrrolizine]-1',1'(2')-dicarbonitrile (SIQPNO) spiroheterocyclics were synthesized. These molecules photocatalytically reduced methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), brilliant blue R (BBR), and Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous acetonitrile (aq-ACN) under sunlight (SL) for the first time. The IQPs and SIQPNO with a lanthanide graphene oxide template (LGT) of lanthanide sulfide nanorods (LnS, CeS, TbS, and HoS) photocatalytically reduced the dyes.
