In the current study, we present a green toolbox to produce ecological compounds like lactone moiety. Rhodococcus erythropolis DSM 44534 cells have been used to oxidize both decane-1,4-diol () and decane-1,5-diol () into the corresponding γ- () and δ-decalactones () with yield of 80% and enantiomeric excess (ee) = 75% and ee = 90%, respectively. Among oxidation of meso diols, (-)-(1S,5R)-cis-3-oxabicyclo[4.3.0]non-7-en-2-one (5a) with 56% yield and ee = 76% as well as (-)-(2R,3S)-cis-endo-3-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]dec-7-en-2-one (6a) with 100% yield and ee = 90% were formed. It is worth mentioning that R. erythropolis DSM 44534 grew in a mineral medium containing ethanol as the sole source of energy and carbon Chirality 28:623-627, 2016. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Zearalenone (ZEN) is a mycoestrogenic polyketide produced by and other phytopathogenic members of the genus . Contamination of cereals with ZEN is frequent, and hydrolytic detoxification with fungal lactonases has been explored. Here, we report the isolation of a bacterial strain, PFA D8-1, with ZEN hydrolyzing activity, cloning of the gene encoding α/β hydrolase ZenA encoded on the linear megaplasmid pSFRL1, and biochemical characterization of nine homologues.

The possibility of using the microorganisms sp. 7p-81, BS394(pBS216), s67, 5Ap, X5, F5 and DSM 11331 as the basis of a biosensor for the phenol index to assess water environments was studied. The adaptation of microorganisms to phenol during growth was carried out to increase the selectivity of the analytical system.

Cytochromes P450 catalyze oxidation of chemically diverse compounds and thus offer great potential for biocatalysis. Due to the complexity of these enzymes, their dependency of nicotinamide cofactors and redox partner proteins, recombinant microbial whole cells appear most appropriate for effective P450-mediated biocatalysis. However, some drawbacks exist that require individual solutions also when P450 whole-cell catalysts are used.

Two novel actinobacterial strains, designated C9-5 and C3-43, were isolated from soil samples of a cave in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, and subjected to taxonomic study by a polyphasic approach. The organisms exhibited a typical rod-coccus developmental cycle during growth and grew at 10-30 °C, pH 5-9 and 0-3 % (w/v) NaCl. In 92 single-copy core gene sequence analysis, strain C9-5 was loosely associated with , albeit sharing low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (97.
