Barley husk (BH) was graft copolymerized by palmitic acid. The crystalline behavior of BH decreased after grafting. Poly vinyl alcohol (PVA)/starch (St) blend film, urea formaldehyde cross linked PVA/St films and composite films containing natural BH, grafted BH were prepared separately. The effect of urea/starch ratio, content of BH and grafted BH on the mechanical properties, water uptake (%), and biodegradability of the composite films was observed. With increase in urea: starch ratio from 0 to 0.5 in the blend, tensile strength of cross linked film increased by 40.23% compared to the PVA/St film. However, in grafted BH composite film, the tensile strength increased by 72.4% than PVA/St film. The degradation rate of natural BH composite film was faster than PVA/St film. Various films were characterized by SEM, FT-IR and thermal analysis.

In two-dimensional (2D) chiral metal-halide perovskites (MHPs), chiral organic spacers induce structural chirality and chiroptical properties in the metal-halide sublattice. This structural chirality enables reversible crystalline-glass phase transitions in (-NEA)PbBr, a prototypical chiral 2D MHP where NEA represents 1-(1-naphthyl)ethylammonium. Here, we investigate two distinct spherulite states of (-NEA)PbBr, exhibiting either radial-like or stripe-like banded patterns depending on the annealing conditions of the amorphous film.

In the present study, with oregano essential oil (OEO) as the active ingredient and polyvinyl alcohol/citric acid (PVA/CA) as the composite matrix, ultraviolet (UV) responded PVA bio-active films incorporated with microcapsules, which were established by chitosan-incorporated titanium dioxide (TiO), were constructed. The UV light-triggered process changed the structure of films, including the degradation of PVA, the fracture of ester bonds and the breaking of glycosidic bonds. UV irradiation reduced the elongation at break, increased the light resistance ability, the surface hydrophobicity and the roughness, and accelerated the release of OEO in films.

Alternatives to nonbiodegradable synthetic plastics for food packaging include films made from biopolymers that are nontoxic and environment-friendly. In this study, carnauba wax (CW) and nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NG) as functional additives were utilized in the production of pectin/gelatin (PG) film. NG was synthesized through the microwave method, using acetic acid as the carbon source, giving size, and zeta potential of 1.

Polymeric membranes with great processability are attractive for the H/CO separation required for hydrogen production from renewable biomass with carbon capture for utilization and sequestration. However, it remains elusive to engineer polymer architectures to obtain desired sub-3.3 Å ultramicropores to efficiently sieve H from CO.

This study introduces a simple approach to dynamically control multilevel optical ellipticity in ferrimagnetic GdFeCo alloys by switching the spin orientation through Joule heating induced by electrical current, with the assistance of a low magnetic field of 3.5 mT. It is demonstrated that selecting specific compositions of Gd (FeCo) alloys, with magnetic compensation temperatures near or above room temperature, allows for significant manipulation of the circular dichroism (CD) effect.
