We combine electrophysiological experiments with the structure-based Poisson-Nernst-Planck 3D calculations to investigate the transport properties of the bacterial porin OmpF under large pH gradients and particularly low salt concentrations. We show that under extreme pH conditions protons and hydroxyls contribute decisively to the overall measured current, challenging the traditional interpretation of some electrokinetic parameters such as channel selectivity and rectification properties. We analyze with unprecedented detail the two intertwined factors ruling the ionic permeation through the channel, namely the differences between cation and anion mobilities and the electrostatic exclusion due to the interaction between permeating ions and channel ionizable residues.

Sorafenib (Sora) is a first-line treatment for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It can significantly improve the survival rate of patients with advanced HCC, but it is prone to drug resistance during treatment, so the therapeutic effect is extremely limited. Here, we demonstrate that an elevated expression of protein kinase p38γ in hepatocellular carcinoma cells diminishes the tumor cells' sensitivity to Sora.

Extreme and chronic adverse experiences in childhood are linked to disruptions in a wide range of behavioral processes, including self-regulation, increased risk taking, and impulsivity. One proposed mechanism for these effects is alterations in how children learn and use information about rewards and risk in their environment. This type of decision making is a complex and multifaceted process consisting of distinct subcomponents, each of which may have varying effects on behavior.

Spirals are a special class of excitable waves that have its significance in the understanding of cardiac arrests and neuronal transduction. In a theoretical model of the chemical Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction system, we explore the dynamics of the spatiotemporal patterns that emerge out of competing reaction and diffusion phenomena. By modifying the existing mathematical models of the reaction kinetics, we have been able to explore the explicit effect of hydrogen ion concentration in the system, so as to achieve various regimes of wave activity, from stable spirals to oscillation death.

Introduction: After the release of the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, third edition (Bayley-III), US norms, an overestimation of outcome was observed. But, the conformity between the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, second edition (BSID-II), and the Bayley-III German norms is unknown. This retrospective analysis aimed to compare outcomes of very preterm infants tested with BSID-II and Bayley-III German norms.

Lithium (Li) metal's extremely high specific energy and low potential make it critical for high-performance batteries. However, uncontrolled dendrite growth and an unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) during repeated cycling still seriously hinder its practical application in Li metal batteries. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and effective approach to fabricate a flexible and robust hybrid SEI layer using two kinds of organo-polysulfides with different sulfur chain lengths [bis(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)disulfide (Si-O-2S) and bis(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)tetrasulfide (Si-O-4S)] as the additives in the electrolyte.
