The perception of self is an important topic in several disciplines such as ethology, behavioral ecology, psychology, developmental and cognitive neuroscience. Self-perception is investigated by experimentally exposing different species of animals to self-stimuli such as their own image, smell or vocalizations. Here we review more than one hundred studies using these methods in birds, a taxonomic group that exhibits a rich diversity regarding ecology and behavior. Exposure to self-image is the main method for studying self-recognition, while exposing birds to their own smell is generally used for the investigation of homing or odor-based kin discrimination. Self-produced vocalizations - especially in oscine songbirds - are used as stimuli for understanding the mechanisms of vocal coding/decoding both at the neural and at the behavioral levels. With this review, we highlight the necessity to study the perception of self in animals cross-modally and to consider the role of experience and development, aspects that can be easily monitored in captive populations of birds.

To maintain stable vision, behaving animals make compensatory eye movements in response to image slip, a reflex known as the optokinetic response (OKR). Although OKR has been studied in several avian species, eye movements during flight are expected to be minimal. This is because vertebrates with laterally placed eyes typically show weak OKR to nasal-to-temporal motion (NT), which simulates typical forward locomotion, compared with temporal-to-nasal motion (TN), which simulates atypical backward locomotion.

Cross-view geo-localization (CVGL) aims to determine the capture location of street-view images by matching them with corresponding 2D maps, such as satellite imagery. While recent bird's eye view (BEV)-based methods have advanced this task by addressing viewpoint and appearance differences, the existing approaches typically rely solely on either OpenStreetMap (OSM) data or satellite imagery, limiting localization robustness due to single-modality constraints. This paper presents a novel CVGL method that fuses OSM data with satellite imagery, leveraging their complementary strengths to enhance localization robustness.

While the content of subjective (personal) experience is inaccessible to external observers, behavioral proxies can frame the nature of that experience and suggest its cognitive requirements. Directed attention is widely recognized as a feature of animal awareness. Background: This study aimed to explore ocular and periocular injuries resulting from animal and bird attacks among patients referred to a tertiary referral eye hospital of Iran over ten years (2014-2024).
Methods: In this retrospective analysis, we collected data on patient demographics, the species of the attacking animal and bird, the nature of the ocular and periocular injuries, details of ophthalmological examinations, therapeutic interventions, and surgical treatments.
Results: One hundred and twenty-nine patients, with an average age of 36 ± 23 years (range: 1-77 years), were included in this study, of whom 81 were male.
