New acenaphthylene-based dithienylethenes have been prepared. Surprisingly they did not show photochromism. However, they readily underwent a tandem addition of a nucleophile and an electrophile, leading to a small library of dearomatized colourless analogues, which, on the contrary, were endowed with photochromic activity. In the absence of the electrophile, the intermediate obtained by C-attack readily aromatizes to give, surprisingly, a final product of direct aromatic nucleophilic substitution, which was not photochromically active.

Mechanically responsive polymer materials have garnered significant interest due to their unique ability to respond to external forces, leading to groundbreaking applications in visual stress mapping and damage detection. However, their use in fibers remains relatively unexplored. In this study, a mechanoresponsive polymer is synthesized by incorporating a spiropyran (SP) mechanophore into a polyurethane backbone.

Electronic coupling between individual redox units in a molecular assembly dictates their charge transfer efficacy. Being a well-defined crystalline structure, the metal-organic framework (MOF) ensures proper positioning of redox-active moieties and provides a unique platform to unveil their charge transfer dynamics and quantification with structural relationships. Here, we demonstrate a novel redox-active MOF with near-infrared through-space intervalence charge transfer by introducing a mixed valence state inside redox-active thiazolothiazole-based ligands (DPTTZ) upon photo- or electrochemical reduction.

Using photoswitchable molecules to manipulate supramolecular interactions under light illumination has driven advancements in numerous fields, allowing for the strategic alteration of molecular systems. However, integrating the moiety responsible for these interactions into the photochromic scaffold can be complex and may hamper the switching efficiency. We thus explored a simple class of organic molecules, namely thiosemicarbazones, featuring both a photoisomerizable C[double bond, length as m-dash]N double bond and a thiourea moiety capable of hydrogen bonding.

ConspectusWhile photochromic natural sodalites, an aluminosilicate mineral, were originally considered as curiosities, articles published in the past ten years have radically changed this perspective. It has been proven that their artificial synthesis was easy and allowed compositional tuning. Combined with simulations, it has been shown that a wide range of photochromic properties were achievable for synthetic sodalites (color, activation energy, reversibility, etc.

The lack of effective therapies for visual restoration in Retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration has led to the development of new strategies, such as optogenetics and retinal prostheses. However, visual restoration is poor due to the massive light-evoked activation of retinal neurons, regardless of the segregation of visual information in ON and OFF channels, which is essential for contrast sensitivity and spatial resolution. Here, we show that Ziapin2, a membrane photoswitch that modulates neuronal capacitance and excitability in a light-dependent manner, is capable of reinstating, in mouse and rat genetic models of photoreceptor degeneration, brisk and sluggish ON, OFF, and ON-OFF responses in retinal ganglion cells evoked by full-field stimuli, with reactivation of their excitatory and inhibitory conductances.
