Article Abstract

It was established that steroidal genins and their glycosides of the spirostan series and (especially) furostan series show anticestodal activity against Hymeiolepis nana species. Search for anthelminthic agents in the indicated series of compounds is a promising direction of research.

Article Synopsis
  • Antifungal drugs are facing challenges due to increased fungal resistance, prompting the investigation of plant extracts, specifically from Phytolacca tetramera, to enhance antifungal activity and reduce side effects.
  • The study combined P. tetramera extracts and compounds like phytolaccoside B with commercial antifungals to assess their effectiveness against Candida strains and aimed at reducing doses to mitigate toxicity while also exploring anti-virulence properties to prevent drug resistance.
  • Results indicated the presence of synergistic effects when using the combinations, demonstrating a potential multi-target approach in combating fungal infections.

Frondosides are the major saponins (triterpene glycosides) of the North Atlantic sea cucumber (). Frondosides possess amphiphilic characteristics due to the presence of various hydrophilic sugar moieties and hydrophobic genin (sapogenin). Saponins are abundant in holothurians, including in sea cucumbers that are widely distributed across the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean.

In this work, metabolic profiling of the different parts of ground cherry (P. pruinosa) including fruits, calyces, leaves, stems and roots using UPLC-MS/MS analysis combined to chemometric analysis was attempted. A total of 82 chromatographic peaks belonging to different metabolite classes were identified including terpenes, flavonoids genin and glycosides, withanolides, physalins, sucrose esters, fatty acids and other miscellaneous compounds with withanolides being the most predominant class.
