In this work, α-NaLuF4:Yb,Er (NLF) nanocomposites (NCs) and β-NLF NCs with diameter about ~13 nm were fabricated by a high temperature decomposition reaction method. The effects of NLF structure on the enhanced red upconversion luminescence performance were investigated. Under 980 nm excitation from a laser diode, the α-NLF emitted dominant red UC emission. Furthermore, the possible energy transfer mechanism was proposed on the basis of our experimental results.

Indigenous chickens play a crucial role in the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in rural Ethiopia. This study aimed to phenotypically characterize indigenous chickens in the Liban Jawi district, focusing on measurements of phenotypic characteristics. The multi-stage sampling method selected 192 households with at least two mature indigenous chickens from 2,166 households, resulting in the sampling of 224 chickens (138 females and 86 males) for phenotypic characterization.

Anemia is a potentially life-threatening blood disorder caused by an insufficient erythroblast volume in the circulatory system. Self-renewal failure of erythroblast progenitors is one of the key pathological factors leading to erythroblast deficiency. However, there are currently no effective drugs that selectively target this process.

The underlying mechanisms explaining the differential course of SARS-CoV-2 infection and the potential clinical consequences after COVID-19 resolution have not been fully elucidated. As a dysregulated mitochondrial activity could impair the immune response, we explored long-lasting changes in mitochondrial functionality, circulating cytokine levels, and metabolomic profiles of infected individuals after symptoms resolution, to evaluate whether a complete recovery could be achieved. Results of this pilot study evidenced that different parameters of aerobic respiration in lymphocytes of individuals recuperated from a severe course lagged behind those shown upon mild COVID-19 recovery, in basal conditions and after simulated reinfection, and they also showed altered glycolytic capacity.

Erythropoietin (EPO) is pivotal in regulating red blood cell (erythrocyte) concentrations and is primarily synthesized in the kidney. Recent research has unveiled a possible link between elevated circulating concentrations of ketone bodies (KB) and circulating EPO concentrations, however, it is not known whether nutritionally induced endogenous ketogenesis can be a stimulus to induce EPO in humans. Therefore, this study aimed to assess whether acute and chronic intake of medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA)-containing triacylglycerol (MCT), which rapidly enhances endogenous circulating KB, would elevate circulating EPO concentrations in humans, as indicated by prior work with exogenous KB administration.

() is a major pathogenic bacterium responsible for bacterial foodborne diseases, making its rapid, specific, and accurate detection crucial. In this study, we develop a ratiometric biosensor based on the recombinase polymerase amplification-clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR associated protein 12a (RPA-CRISPR/Cas12a) system and Eu-metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) fluorescent nanomaterials for the high-sensitivity detection of , combining with RPA for efficient isothermal amplification, this sensor enhances specificity and sensitivity by utilizing the target activation of CRISPR/Cas12a. The Eu-MOF serves a dual function, providing stable red fluorescence as a reference signal and adsorbing FAM-labeled probes for fluorescence quenching, forming a dual-signal system that significantly reduces background interference.
