Dental implants are crucial in contemporary oral rehabilitation, necessitating optimal integration with the surrounding soft tissues for durable success. The attachment between the implant surface and peri-implant mucosa should establish a secure seal to prevent bacterial infiltration and subsequent tissue inflammation. This concise review examines the histological and biological perspectives of peri-implant soft tissue reactions to zirconium and titanium abutments, shedding light on their respective advantages and limitations.

Low fracture toughness, low-temperature degradation (LTD) susceptibility, and inadequate soft tissue integration greatly limit the application of zirconia ceramic abutment. Integrating the "surface" of hard all-ceramic materials into the gingival soft tissue and simultaneously promoting the "inner" LTD resistance and fracture toughness is challenging. Composite ceramics are effective in improving the comprehensive properties of materials.

The aims of this study were twofold: first, to investigate the surface roughness of different abutment materials prepared using various manufacturing methods; and, second, to evaluate colonization by Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans according to abutment material and manufacturing method. Six material/manufacturing method combinations were investigated in this study, namely chromium-cobalt (Cr-Co) (prepared using casting, milling, and laser sintering) and titanium, zirconia, and anodized titanium (all prepared using milling); titanium (stock) abutments were used as the control group. Surface roughness of seven specimens from each group was evaluated using atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

Thermal stress behavior of monolithic zirconia crowns with different thicknesses.

J Prosthodont Res

January 2025

Advanced Prosthodontics, Oral Health Sciences, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Institute of Science Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan.

Purpose: This study was aimed at investigating the thermal stresses in monolithic zirconia crowns (MZC) of various thicknesses and elucidating their thermal behavior under cooling or heating changes in the oral cavity. Additionally, the clinical availability and potential issues of MZC were examined by comparing them with other crown materials.

Methods: Finite element models comprising MZC (0.

Background: The mechanical properties of framework materials significantly influence stress distribution and the long-term success of implant-supported prostheses. Although titanium, cobalt-chromium, zirconia, and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) are widely used, their biomechanical performance under dynamic loading conditions remains insufficiently investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the biomechanical behavior of four framework materials with different Young's modulus using dynamic finite element stress analysis.
