Published: November 2016

Purpose: To report the potential risk of severe positive vitreous pressure during combined penetrating keratoplasty, cataract extraction, and intraocular lens implantation (triple procedure), using positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) during general endotracheal anesthesia.

Methods: This is a case report of a 32-year-old man and a 48-year-old man who underwent penetrating keratoplasty, extracapsular lens extraction, and intraocular lens implantation during which severe positive posterior pressure was encountered during the open-sky lens extraction.

Results: In both cases, severe posterior vitreous pressure against an intact posterior capsule hindered intraocular lens implantation during the triple procedure. Despite exhaustive search for the cause of posterior pressure, no other risk factors were found other than the use of PEEP.

Conclusions: During open-sky procedures, PEEP may be a risk factor for severe positive posterior vitreous pressure. Given the rising use of PEEP, surgeons should be aware and cautious of this potential complication.

Background: A standard questionnaire for generalized anxiety disorders is the GAD-7. Attempts to improve its screening capacity in oncological settings resulted in a discussion about lowering its cut-off. This study examines the diagnostic accuracy of the GAD-7 items depending on applied cut-offs and whether, similar to depressive symptoms, a distinction between somatic-emotional and cognitive items might be relevant.

Climate change is imposing multiple stressors on marine life, leading to a restructuring of ecological communities as species exhibit differential sensitivities to these stressors. With the ocean warming and wind patterns shifting, processes that drive thermal variations in coastal regions, such as marine heatwaves and upwelling events, can change in frequency, timing, duration, and severity. These changes in environmental parameters can physiologically impact organisms residing in these habitats.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of pyrotinib, an orally administered small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor, combined with neoadjuvant chemotherapy in treating patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer. Pyrotinib works by inhibiting the HER2 signaling pathway, thereby preventing tumor cell growth. This single-arm clinical trial aimed to assess the total pathological complete response (tpCR; ypT0/is and ypN0) rate as the primary endpoint.

Correlates of Impaired Timing Abilities in Schizophrenia: A Systematic Review.

December 2024

Department of Neuroscience, Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, Genetics, Maternal and Child Health, Section of Psychiatry, University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy.

This review aimed at summarizing the literature evidence on clinical, cognitive, and neurobiological correlates of impaired timing abilities in schizophrenia (SCZ). Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, and PsycInfo by looking at correlates between timing abilities and either symptom severity, cognition, and neurobiological data (imaging and electroencephalography) in individuals with SCZ, without restrictions on study design. A total of 45 articles were selected: associations were identified between impaired timing performance and positive, negative, and disorganization symptoms, as well as with executive functioning, working memory, and attention.

Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of an intra-articular (IA) CLK/DYRK inhibitor, lorecivivint (LOR), for the treatment of moderate to severe symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods: This was a Phase 3, 28-week, multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating the efficacy and safety of a single IA injection of LOR. Patients with ACR-defined knee OA, Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grades 2-3, and pain Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) ≥4 and ≤8 in the target knee were randomised (1:1) to receive LOR 0.
