Previous studies suggest overuse disparity of head computed tomography (CT) in white pediatric trauma patients with minor head injuries. Our study is meant to determine if race or insurance status impacts the probability of obtaining head CT in patients with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) = 15. Using the 2008-2010 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey for Emergency Departments (NHAMCS) database, the following variables were analyzed: race, emergency medical services (EMS) arrival, triage category, admission status, gender, age, and insurance status. Patients with injuries were excluded. All patients included had GCS = 15. In univariate analysis, head CT is more likely to be obtained for patients in the following categories: Medicare insured, private insurance, Medicaid insured, and self-pay, EMS arrival, triage category immediate, and age >75 years. In logistic regression, race (white vs. black) was no longer significant, but there was disparity based on insurance status with privately insured patients more likely to receive a head CT (OR = 1.683, 95 % CI = 1.255-2.259). After controlling for the above inclusion variables and focusing on patients less likely to need CT (non-traumatic with GCS = 15), privately insured patients were more likely to receive a head CT compared with uninsured. Race alone was not associated with an increased probability of receiving a head CT.

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, MD, USA.
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate health literacy in orthopedic shoulder and elbow patients.
Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included all new English-speaking adult patients presenting to two fellowship-trained shoulder and elbow surgeons from October 2020-July 2021. Patients who did not complete the Brief Health Literacy Screen Tool (BRIEF) were excluded, leaving 594 patients.

Background: The accessibility and outcomes of cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 inhibitors (CDKi) in metastatic breast cancer (MBC) according to demographic factors are unknown.
Research Design And Methods: Retrospective review of patients with ER+ MBC prescribed first-line CDKi therapy from January 2015 through December 2022. Abstraction included time from CDKi prescription to drug initiation (TTI), time from CDKi initiation to progression (TTP), time from CDKi initiation to death or 6/30/2022, and variables (age, race, partner status, insurance type, BMI, number of comorbidities).

Purpose: Prolonged length of stay (PLOS) can lead to resource misallocation and higher complication risks. However, there is no consensus on defining PLOS for endoscopic transsphenoidal pituitary surgery (ETPS). Therefore, we investigated the impact of varying PLOS definitions on factors associated with PLOS in patients undergoing ETPS.

Purpose: To perform a nationwide analysis of ablation compared to partial and total nephrectomy for the management of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) to evaluate utilization trends and disparities in the USA.
Materials And Methods: The 2016-2020 National Inpatient Sample was analyzed. Using ICD-10, we identified the diagnosis of RCC then analyzed the utilization trends of ablation and nephrectomies (both partial and complete).

Background: The optimal anastomotic configuration for right-sided colectomies remains controversial, with comparable postoperative outcomes across techniques. Thus, economic considerations may play a larger role in decision-making within cost-constrained healthcare settings.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated right-sided colectomies with ileocolic anastomosis at a Swiss tertiary center between 2016 and 2021.
