Higher order acenes (i.e., acenes longer than pentacene) and extended zethrenes (i.e., zethrenes longer than zethrene) are theoretically predicted to have an open-shell singlet ground state, and the radical character is supposed to increase with extension of molecular size. The increasing radical character makes the synthesis of long zethrenes and acenes very challenging, and so far, the longest reported zethrene and acene derivatives are octazethrene and nonacene, respectively. In addition, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of the differences between these two closely related open-shell singlet systems. In this work, we report the first synthesis of a challenging nonazethrene derivative, HR-NZ, and its full structural and physical characterizations including variable temperature NMR, ESR, SQUID, UV-vis-NIR absorption and electrochemical measurements. Compound HR-NZ has an open-shell singlet ground state with a moderate diradical character (y0 = 0.48 based on UCAM-B3LYP calculation) and a small singlet-triplet gap (ΔES-T = -5.2 kcal/mol based on SQUID data), thus showing magnetic activity at room temperature. It also shows amphoteric redox behavior, with a small electrochemical energy gap (1.33 eV). Its electronic structure and physical properties are compared with those of Anthony's nonacene derivative JA-NA and other zethrene derivatives. A more general comparison between higher order acenes and extended zethrenes was also conducted on the basis of ab initio electronic structure calculations, and it was found that zethrenes and acenes have very different spatial localization of the unpaired electrons. As a result, a faster decrease of singlet-triplet energy gap and a faster increase of radical character with increase of the number of benzenoid rings were observed in zethrene series. Our studies reveal that spatial localization of the frontier molecular orbitals play a very important role on the nature of radical character as well as the excitation energy.

Two π-radical complexes containing bisazo-aromatic-centered radical anion (1•-) were synthesized through in-situ electron transfer from metal-to-ligand using [IrI] and 2-(2-Pyridylazo)azobenzene (1) in inert hydrocarbon solvent. These are characterized as diradical [IrIII(1•-)2]+[2]+ and monoradical [IrIII(1•-)Cl2(PPh3)] 3. In contrast, a rare metal-mediated hydrolytic cleavage of the C(sp2)-N bond occurred in protic solvent resulting in quaternary radical complex [IrIII(1•-)(1')(PPh3)]+(4)+.

The linkage of an imidazole-based N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO), containing a terminal CH2 donor group, with a phosphorus-centered diradical molecular fragment leads to an open-shell singlet diphospha-indenylide system, a new class of P-heterocycles, which can be interpreted both as a phosphorus-centered diradicaloid and as a zwitterion with a permanent, overall charge separation between the N- and P-heterocyclic ring systems. The rotation of the imidazole ring, which is thermally possible due to a central C-C bond with a weakened π-component, changes both the charge separation and diradical character depending on the dihedral angle, as quantum mechanical calculations indicate. By varying the bulkiness of substituents at the imidazole-based NHO, it was possible to obtain different diphospha-indenylide species with different rotation angles in the solid state and hence varying diradical character.

In this work, the stability, aromaticity and radical character of pristine and eleven BN-doped armchair 5 and zigzag 5, 6, and 7 periacenes, were chosen for studying the effect of different doping schemes to stabilize the periacene, and to direct the open-shell density into specific regions of the PAH sheets. Ab initio multireference methods and different DFT functionals were used to analyze the singlet triplet (ST) energy. Moreover, a range of descriptors were used to characterize the open-shell character and aromaticity of the different doped structures.

Acenes are an important class of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that have gained considerable attention from chemists, physicists, and material scientists, due to their exceptional potential for organic electronics. They serve as an ideal platform for studying the physical and chemical properties of sp carbon frameworks in the one-dimensional limit and also provide a fertile playground to explore magnetism in graphenic nanostructures due to their zigzag edge topology. While higher acenes up to tridecacene have been successfully generated by means of on-surface synthesis, it is imperative to extend their synthesis toward even longer homologues to comprehensively understand the evolution of their electronic ground state.

We present the theory and implementation of a fully variational wave function-density functional theory (DFT) hybrid model, which is applicable to many cases of strong correlation. We denote this model as the multiconfigurational self-consistent on-top pair-density functional theory (MC-srPDFT) model. We have previously shown how the multiconfigurational short-range DFT (MC-srDFT) hybrid model can describe many multiconfigurational cases of any spin symmetry and also state-specific calculations on excited states [Hedegård et al.
