Advanced xerophthalmia as a presenting sign in cystic fibrosis.

Xerophthalmia is a common complication of vitamin A deficiency in communities where malnutrition is found. We report on a 16-month-old infant with severe photophobia and failure to thrive. On examination, her major presenting sign was corneal xerosis, with corneal and conjunctival keratinization, and corneal stromal edema with opacification. Based on these findings, vitamin A deficiency secondary to fat malabsorption was suspected, and a workup confirmed the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis. With parenteral vitamin A supplementation, she had complete resolution of her ocular signs and symptoms. This case illustrates the value of a complete ophthalmic examination in the diagnosis of fat malabsorption syndromes.

Introduction: The indication for endoscopic third ventriculostomy is often contested in children younger than 1 year. This study aims to establish the benefits of this modality in children with idiopathic congenital aqueductal stenosis.

Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed on patients <1 year old with idiopathic congenital aqueductal stenosis undergoing endoscopic third ventriculostomy between 2004 and 2020.

Thoracoabdominal normothermic regional perfusion: Is it ethical?

Monash Bioeth Rev

Faculty of Arts and Sciences, American University of Beirut, Riad El Solh, Beirut, 1107 2020, Lebanon.

Thoracoabdominal normothermic regional perfusion (TA-NRP), a new method of controlled donation after circulatory death, seems to provide more and better organs for patients on organ transplant waiting lists compared to standard controlled donation after circulatory death. Despite its benefits, the ethical permissibility of TA-NRP is currently a highly debated issue. The recent statement published by the American College of Physicians (ACP) highlights the reasons for these debates.

Objectives: Chest wall infiltration in primary lung cancer affects the surgical and therapeutic strategies. This study evaluates the efficacy of the chest wall vessel involvement in subpleural lung cancer (CWVI) on ultra-high-resolution CT (UHR-CT) for detecting chest wall invasion.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis of lung cancer cases with confirmed pleural and chest wall invasion was conducted from November 2019 to April 2022.

Novel Insights In presence of cardiotocographic features suspected for hypoxic insult, intrapartum ultrasound in the hands of experienced operators can demonstrate cerebral edema as an indirect sign of fetal hypoxia affecting the fetal CNS and exclude non-hypoxic conditions potentially leading to abnormalities of the fetal heart rate. Introduction Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is a syndrome involving the fetal central nervous system as the result of a perinatal hypoxic-ischemic injury. To date, transfontanellar ultrasound represents the first line exam in neonates with clinical suspicion of HIE as it allows to show features indicating acute hypoxic injury and exclude potential non-hypoxic determinants of HIE, however there is no report concerning the sonographic assessment of the brain during labor.

Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) are permselective membranes that, in principle, only allow the flow of ions with a specific charge sign, opposite to that of the fixed membrane ionic groups (counter-ions). This charge-based selectivity, like the size-based selectivity of classic semipermeable membranes, leads to an uneven distribution of permeating ions on the two sides of the membrane, which allows for ion separation or recovery in various processes in industry or environmental protection. Here, we apply the principles of mass balance, charge neutrality, and equality of electrochemical potentials in the state of thermodynamic equilibrium to provide a simple method for estimating the Gibbs-Donnan factors and the equilibrium concentrations of permeating ions in two compartments separated by an ideal IEM, i.
