For the optimal use of β-lactoglobulin nanofibrils as a raw material in biological composites an in-depth knowledge of their interactions with other constituents is necessary. To understand the effect of electrostatic interactions on the morphology of resulting complexes, β-lactoglobulin nanofibrils were allowed to interact with pectins in which the amount of available negative charge was controlled by selecting their degree of methylesterification. In this study, citrus pectins having different degrees of methylesterification (∼48, 67, 86, and 97%) were selected and interacted with nanofibrils at pH 2 and pH 3, where they possess a net positive charge. Electrostatic complexes formed between β-lactoglobulin nanofibrils and all pectin types, except for the sample having a degree of methylesterification of 97%. The morphology of these complexes, however, differed significantly with the degree of methylesterification of the pectin, its concentration, and the pH of the medium, revealing that distinct desired biological architectures can be attained relatively easily through manipulating the electrostatic interactions. Interestingly, the pectin with a degree of methylesterification of 86% was found to crosslink the β-lactoglobulin nanofibrils into ordered 'nanotapes'.

This study compared the use of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) in different concentrations to reinforce the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix. Both nanofillers significantly improved the elastic modulus and tensile strength of PVA biocomposite films. The optimum concentration of CNF and LCNF was 6% relative to PVA, which improved the tensile strength of the final PVA biocomposite with CNF and LCNF by 53% and 39%, respectively, compared to the neat PVA film.

Protein self-assembly allows for the formation of diverse supramolecular materials from relatively simple building blocks. In this study, a single-component self-assembling hydrogel is developed using the recombinant protein CsgA, and its successful application for spinal cord injury repair is demonstrated. Gelation is achieved by the physical entanglement of CsgA nanofibrils, resulting in a self-supporting hydrogel at low concentrations (≥5 mg mL).

Integrating liquid metal (LM) with wood fibers for flexible paper electronics is intriguing yet extremely challenging due to poor mechanical performance. Here, we disclose a hemicellulose trapping strategy to achieve exceptional ultrastrong and tough LM-based paper electronics. Holocellulose nanofibrils (HCNFs) with hemicellulose retention of approximately 20 % are found to effectively entrap nanoscale LM within the fibril network, analogous to spider silk capturing small water droplets.

Uncontrolled release of active agents in active packaging reduces antimicrobial efficacy, hindering the effective protection of perishable products from microbial infection. Herein, a novel defective engineering was proposed to design defective and hollow ZIF-8 structures grown on TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNFs) and use them as fast-reacting nanocarriers for loading and controlled release curcumin (Cur) in sodium alginate (SA) active packaging systems (CZT-Cur-SA). By employing stable chelation between tannic acid (TA) and ZIF-8 zinc ions, the connections between zinc ions and imidazole ligands were severed to form a loose and hollow structure, which facilitates the rapid reaction and release of active ingredients triggered by pH changes in the microenvironment.

Mulberry silk (Bombyx mori) and eri silk (Samia/Philosamia ricini) are widely used silks. Eri silk is a wild silk that contains an arginine-glycine-aspartic acid tripeptide sequence within its structure, making it a potential and sustainable biomaterial. However, its poor solubility using conventional methods has resulted in limited research compared with that of mulberry silk fibroin.
