Introduction: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a bilateral multi-factorial disease. The pathogenesis of this disease is not obviously determined, but the role of various inflammatory cytokines has been specified. This study has provided a comparison between the level of interleukin-17 (IL17) in the serum and tears of case and control groups, and also the relationship between the level of this interleukin with severity of signs and symptoms of the disease.

Materials And Methods: This case-control study has been accomplished on 40 individuals (20 healthy people and 20 patients who suffer from VKC) in Al-Zahra Eye Center in 2014. The level of interleukin was isolated in an individual's tear by Schirmer strips; moreover, serum interleukin has been measured.

Results: The average of interleukin 17 in serum in the case group was 25.5±4.1 pg/dl and in the control group was 12.5±5.7 pg/dl. The average of interleukin 17 in the case group was 259.6±91.4 pg/dl in the tear and was 50.6±20.8 pg/dl for the control group; the signs and symptoms of the IL-17 disease were associated with the severity of Trantas dots.

Conclusions: Interleukin-17 has a role in the pathogenesis of VKC and also has been proven in the former studies.

Background: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) has been described as a chronic allergen/immune-mediated disease characterized by symptoms of esophageal dysfunction and eosinophilic infiltration of the mucosa.

Summary: Over the past decades, EoE has been increasingly recognized in various geographical areas with a high socioeconomic development (mostly industrialized countries) and has evolved from an unknown to a clinically distinct disease with increasing prevalence and incidence. An average age at diagnosis between 30 and 50 years and a male predominance have been consistently observed.

Meibomian gland alterations in allergic conjunctivitis: insights from a novel quantitative analysis algorithm.

Front Cell Dev Biol

January 2025

Fujian Provincial Hospital, Shengli Clinical Medical College of Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou University Affiliated Provincial Hospital, Fuzhou, China.

Purpose: To investigate the changes in meibomian gland (MG) structure in allergic conjunctivitis (AC) patients using an intelligent quantitative analysis algorithm and to explore the relationship between these changes and clinical parameters.

Methods: A total of 252 eyes from patients with AC and 200 eyes from normal controls were examined. Infrared meibography was performed using the non-contact mode of the Keratograph 5M.

Objective: Sierra Leone, a country where onchocerciasis is endemic in 14 of the 16 districts, was the focus of our investigation. Despite 17 rounds of annual ivermectin treatment since 2005, a report circulated by a local politician indicated an increase in cases of suspected onchocerciasis-related vision impairment in two villages (Mangobo and Petifu) in Tonkolili district. In response, the National Neglected Tropical Disease Program conducted a comprehensive investigation.

Background: Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is the only treatment that modifies the natural course of allergies. However, AIT is only used in some eligible patients, is frequently underused, and only a few studies investigated this aspects. Understanding AIT utilization patterns might disclose information about why it is underused, thus providing valuable insights on how to broaden the positive impact it can have on the population.
