The surgical technique used in thyroidectomy is of decisive importance for the rate of recurrent nerve injury. The latter was reduced from 4.9 to 2.2 per cent by surgical treatment without opening of the retrothyroid connective tissue space and without ligature of the inferior thyroid artery.
