Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate anatomical and functional outcomes of the Smaller-Incision New Generation Implantable Miniature Telescope (SING IMT™) in patients with bilateral advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Methods: This non-comparative retrospective single-surgeon interventional case series included patients with bilateral late-stage AMD who underwent cataract surgery and SING IMT™ implantation at the Sant'Anna University Hospital, University of Ferrara, Italy. The main outcome measures included corrected distance (CDVA) and near visual acuity (CNVA), endothelial cell loss (ECL), and incidence of complications.

History of Lens Care Products in Japan: Insights From Advertisements in the Journal of the Japan Contact Lens Society for 65 Years.

Eye Contact Lens

December 2024

Department of Ophthalmology (H.T.), Juntendo University Shizuoka Hospital, Izunokuni, Japan; Department of Ophthalmology (A.M.), St. Marianna University School of Medicine, Kawasaki, Japan; Department of Innovative Visual Science (S.K.), Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka, Japan; Department of Ophthalmology (Y.H.), Toho University Faculty of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan; and Japan Contact Lens Society (H.T., A.M., S.K., Y.H.), Osaka, Japan.

This review examines the history of contact lens (CL) care products, particularly focusing on hard contact lenses (HCLs) like those made from polymethyl methacrylate and rigid gas permeable (RGP) materials. Although literature on CL history is extensive, there is limited information on the history of CL care products, especially in Japan. This review uses advertisements from the Journal of the Japan Contact Lens Society from 1959 to 2023 to trace the evolution of these products.

Bilateral Fuchs' Superficial Marginal Keratitis Diagnosis and Treatment.

Life (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Nagasaki University, Nagasaki 852-8501, Japan.

In this study, we reported two patients with clinical pictures compatible with the diagnosis of bilateral Fuchs' superficial marginal keratitis (FSMK) treated with surgical treatment and anti-inflammatory drugs. The cases suffered from bilateral photophopia, blurred vision, and pseudopterygium with normal intraocular pressure (IOP). Pseudopterygia extended from temporal and nasal sides and had a gray line between the corneal normal epithelium with no lipid deposits.

Development of Biomimetic Substrates for Limbal Epithelial Stem Cells Using Collagen-Based Films, Hyaluronic Acid, Immortalized Cells, and Macromolecular Crowding.

Life (Basel)

November 2024

Regenerative, Modular & Developmental Engineering Laboratory (REMODEL) and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM), Biomedical Sciences Building, University of Galway, H91 TK33 Galway, Ireland.

Despite the promising potential of cell-based therapies developed using tissue engineering techniques to treat a wide range of diseases, including limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), which leads to corneal blindness, their commercialization remains constrained. This is primarily attributable to the limited cell sources, the use of non-standardizable, unscalable, and unsustainable techniques, and the extended manufacturing processes required to produce transplantable tissue-like surrogates. Herein, we present the first demonstration of the potential of a novel approach combining collagen films (CF), hyaluronic acid (HA), human telomerase-immortalized limbal epithelial stem cells (T-LESCs), and macromolecular crowding (MMC) to develop innovative biomimetic substrates for limbal epithelial stem cells (LESCs).

Hepatolenticular degeneration, also known as Wilson's disease, is a type of autosomal recessive genetic disorder of copper metabolism. The causative gene, ATP7B, is located on the long arm of chromosome 13 and encodes a P-type ATPase that is involved in copper transport. Pathogenic mutations in the ATP7B gene sequence lead to the diminished or lost function of the ATP7B protein, resulting in pathological copper deposition in organs such as the liver, brain, kidneys, and cornea.
