Background: High levels of catecholamines are cardiotoxic and associated with stress-induced cardiomyopathies. Septic patients are routinely exposed to endogenously released and exogenously administered catecholamines, which may alter cardiac function and perfusion causing ischemia. Early during human septic shock, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) decreases but normalizes in survivors over 7-10 days.

Our knowledge of which bone marrow cells affect red cell production is still incomplete. To explore the role of osteocytes in the process we performed bulk RNAseq of osteocytes isolated from control and phlebotomized mice. The top-upregulated gene following phlebotomy was , erythroferrone ( ).

Itaconate is an immunomodulatory metabolite that alters mitochondrial metabolism and immune cell function. This organic acid is endogenously synthesized via tricarboxylic acid (TCA) metabolism downstream of TLR signaling. Itaconate-based treatment strategies are being explored to mitigate numerous inflammatory conditions.

Biological soil crusts (or biocrust) are diminutive soil communities with ecological functions disproportionate to their size. These communities are composed of lichens, bryophytes, cyanobacteria, fungi, liverworts, and other microorganisms. Creating stabilizing matrices, these microorganisms interact with soil surface minerals thereby enhancing soil quality by redistributing nutrients and reducing erosion by containment of soil particles.
