Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital anomalies. For many years, surgeons have been attempting to reduce the severity of the deformity before the surgical repair to achieve a better outcome. The nasoalveolar molding technique uses acrylic nasal stents attached to the vestibular shield of an oral molding plate to mold the nasal alar cartilages into a more normal form and position during the presurgical period. Proponents of nasoalveolar molding claim several benefits, including improved aesthetic outcome, reduced overall costs, and a psychosocial benefit to the family. Research on these outcomes is not conclusive.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) are important for post-transcriptional RNA processing, including pre-mRNA alternative splicing, mRNA stability, and translation. Several RBPs have been shown to play pivotal roles in the inner ear, whose dysfunction leads to auditory and/or balance impairments. Epithelial splicing-regulatory protein 1 (ESRP1) regulates alternative splicing and mRNA stability, and mutations in gene have been associated with sensorineural hearing loss in humans.

Rare heterozygous variants in IRF6 (interferon regulatory factor-6) gene cause van der Woude syndrome 1 (VWS1) or Popliteal Pterygium syndrome, two forms of syndromic cleft lip/palate (CLP) that present with a variety of congenital malformations due to impairment ectodermal homeostasis. These malformations include, in addition to CLP, lip pits, pterygia, and intraoral and eyelid fibrous bands. Amniotic band sequence (ABS) is a rare condition of unknown genetic etiology that involves a range of congenital anomalies caused by the entanglement of fibrous bands, which disrupt fetal body parts.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) impact nasolabial appearance, influencing the physical, psychological, and quality of life (QoL) of affected individuals. Evaluations of the nasolabial aesthetics by patients and medical professionals (both experienced and inexperienced) are critical for enhancing patient care. This cross-sectional study enrolled 32 patients aged 16 to 20 years with CLP who underwent continuous treatment at a university hospital in Thailand.

Secondary unilateral cleft lip (UCL) rhinoplasty is challenging for plastic surgeons, and therefore there are still risks of complications and the need for revision. In this study, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis for patients undergoing secondary UCL rhinoplasty to compare deformity and revision rates of rhinoplasty with different cartilage. The Medline, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were systematically searched for relevant literature from the database inception to October 2022.
