Introduction: Vocal distortion, also known as a scream or growl, is used worldwide as an essential technique in singing, especially in rock and metal, and as an ethnic voice in Mongolian singing. However, the production mechanism of vocal distortion is not yet clearly understood owing to limited research on the behavior of the larynx, which is the source of the distorted voice.

Objectives: This study used high-speed digital imaging (HSDI) to observe the larynx of professional singers with exceptional singing skills and determine the laryngeal dynamics in the voice production of various vocal distortions.

Background:  Clot waveform analysis (CWA) provides a global assessment of hemostasis and may be useful for patients with cirrhosis with complex hemostatic abnormalities. This study aimed to assess the association between prothrombin time (PT-) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT-) based CWA parameters and cirrhosis severity and prospectively evaluate the role of CWA in predicting mortality and acute decompensation (AD) over 1 year.

Methods:  This prospective study included adult patients with cirrhosis between June 2021 and December 2023 at Chulalongkorn University Hospital.

Poincaré plot analysis of ECG uncovers beneficial effects of omaveloxolone in a mouse model of Friedreich's ataxia.

Heart Rhythm

January 2025

Department of Molecular Biosciences, University of California, Davis, CA, USA; Department of Basic Sciences, California Northstate University, Elk Grove, CA. Electronic address:

Background: Friedreich's ataxia (FA) is a rare inherited neuromuscular disorder, where most patients die from lethal cardiomyopathy and arrhythmias. Mechanisms leading to arrhythmic events in FA patients are poorly understood.

Objective: This study aims to examine cardiac electrical signal propagation in mouse model of FA with severe cardiomyopathy and evaluate effects of omaveloxolone (OMAV), the first FDA-approved therapy.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Advanced Brain Monitoring, Inc., Carlsbad, CA, USA.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are common causes of dementia, but differentiating between them can be challenging due to overlapping symptoms [1]. Quantitative electroencephalography (EEG) is emerging as a promising tool to identify potential biosignatures that can distinguish AD and FTD [2]-[5]. Prior EEG research has revealed slowing of the posterior dominant rhythm (PDR) in both AD and FTD patients compared to controls, reflecting underlying neurodegeneration.

Background: Alzheimer's disease is associated with neurotoxic amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques. Studies in mice demonstrated that cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) clearance, if impaired, reduces Aβ clearance by 70% and that sleep enhances CSF clearance via expanding extracellular space by 60%. However, the impact of sleep on extracellular volume in human remains unclear due to lack of non-invasive technology.
