Advantages and disadvantages of the Belgian not-only-fault system for medical incidents.

Published: February 2017

In 2010, the Belgian compensation system for medical incidents was reformed, in order to overcome some important deficiencies of court procedures. This resulted in a not-only-fault compensation system, following the establishment of the Fund for Medical Accidents (FMA). This paper seeks to clarify the main advantages and disadvantages of this reform. After all, the legislator paid little attention to the impact on physicians, who also seem to be insufficiently informed. However, currently the FMA experiences a significant delay in processing compensation requests. The true effects of the not-only-fault system for patients and physicians as well as for health care quality therefore still remain unclear today.

This retrospective study aimed to compare the efficacy of portable ear endoscopic tympanic injection versus conventional ear endoscopic tympanic injection in the treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Clinical data of 128 patients with ISSNHL who did not respond to conventional treatment were collected from January 2019 to June 2023. Patients were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 (n = 60) received portable ear endoscopic tympanic injection, while Group 2 (n = 68) received conventional ear endoscopic tympanic injection.

In this paper, we introduce a new method for precise determination of the calibration function of liquid crystal spatial light modulators (LC-SLMs). The proposed method shares the advantages of commonly used methods, interferometric and diffraction-based methods, and is free of their disadvantages. The method proposed here is based on the evaluation of Fresnel diffraction of light from a phase-discontinuity pattern loaded into the SLM device.

The increasing detection of submucosal tumors (SMTs) in the upper gastrointestinal tract (UGI) is due to the increased clinical use of endoscopy and imaging technology. Some of these SMTs have malignant potential and may cause clinical symptoms. Thus, it is recommended in clinical guidelines to consider resection of these SMTs.

This systematic review compares the health, welfare, and behaviour of dairy cows in year-round loose housing systems against those kept in other housing systems in temperate regions. Year-round loose housing systems comprised housing where dairy cows had no access to the outdoors or only had access to a yard, pen or run. The comparator housing systems also comprised housing with and without outdoor access (including grazing).

Enhancing Reflexivity in Research and Practice in Healthcare Through Oral-Based Autoethnography.

Qual Health Res

Skåne University Hospital & Department of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University, Lund, Sweden.

Autoethnography is an increasingly used method to promote individual and group reflexivity in research, not the least in healthcare. However, autoethnography's uptake among practitioners is impeded by the fact that it has not been adequately adapted to practitioner settings from its academic origins. This article analyzes the experience of a research team comprised of practitioners/surgeons and social scientists using primarily oral-based autoethnographic practices to promote reflexive collaboration in a longitudinal research and innovation project on selection and training of surgical residents.
