Spinel-type Li0.64Fe2.15Ge0.21O4, lithium diiron(III) germanium tetra-oxide, has been formed as a by-product during flux growth of an Li-Fe-Ge pyroxene-type material. In the title compound, lithium is ordered on the octa-hedral B sites, while Ge(4+) orders onto the tetra-hedral A sites, and iron distributes over both the octa-hedral and tetra-hedral sites, and is in the trivalent state as determined from Mössbauer spectroscopy. The oxygen parameter u is 0.2543; thus, the spinel is close to having an ideal cubic closed packing of the O atoms. The title spinel is compared with other Li- and Ge-containing spinels.

Graphite is widely used as the negative electrode, and its adoption enabled much of the modern portable electronics technology landscape. However, developing markets, such as electric vehicles and grid-scale storage, have increased demands, including higher energy content and a diverse materials supply chain.

Unraveling the conversion mechanism toward spinel sulfides as cathode materials for Mg-ion batteries.

Rechargeable Mg batteries are promising candidates for achieving considerable high-energy-density. Enhancing the energy density can be achieved by integrating metallic Mg anodes with conversion-type cathode materials, which are characterized by multi-electron transfer process and elevated specific capacities in contrast to intercalation-type materials. Despite these advantages, the conversion-type cathodes still have some challenges of substantial volume expansion, sluggish diffusion kinetics and intricate mesophase evolution during repeated electrochemical reactions.

Compositionally complex doping of spinel oxides toward high-entropy oxides is expected to enhance their electrochemical performance substantially. We successfully prepared high-entropy compounds, the oxide (ZnMgCoCu)FeO (HEOFe), lithiated oxyfluoride Li(ZnMgCoCu)FeOF (LiHEOFeF), and lithiated oxychloride Li(ZnMgCoCu)FeOCl (LiHEOFeCl) with a spinel-based cubic structure by ball milling and subsequent heat treatment. The products exhibit particles with sizes from 50 to 200 nm with a homogeneous atomic distribution.

Spinel-type nickel ferrite (NiFeO, x≤1) is a widely used electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Due to the lower hybridization of metal-d and oxygen-p orbitals, the OER process on NiFeO follows the sluggish adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM). Generally, activating the lattice oxygen to trigger the lattice-oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM) can enhance the OER activity.

The selective extraction of lithium from aqueous systems necessitates efficient sorbent materials. Spinel-type lithium manganese oxide ion sieves (LMOs) have been bee recognized for their high performance in this application. However, the elevated market cost of the spinel form (λ-MnO) raises economic concerns, posing challenges to the feasibility of the extraction process.
