Does Rose angina in midlife women matter? Further evidence from the Royal College of General Practitioners' Oral Contraception Study.

Maturitas

January 2025

Academic Primary Care, Institute of Applied Health Sciences, University of Aberdeen, Polwarth Building, Foresterhill, Aberdeen AB25 2ZD, UK. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Globally, ischaemic heart disease (IHD) is a leading cause of death among women; however, disparities remain in the diagnosis and treatment of IHD between females and males. There is limited evidence about mortality risks among women with symptoms of IHD who remain undiagnosed. We re-examined the mortality risks in midlife women who completed the Rose Angina Questionnaire, among a subset of the Royal College of General Practitioners' Oral Contraception Study cohort.

Background: Current clinical decision support systems (DSS) are trained and validated on observational data from the clinic in which the DSS is going to be applied. This is problematic for treatments that have already been validated in a randomized clinical trial (RCT), but have not yet been introduced in any clinic. In this work, we report on a method for training and validating the DSS core before introduction to a clinic, using the RCT data themselves.

Upstream open reading frames (uORFs) are -regulatory motifs that are predicted to occur in the 5' UTRs of the majority of human protein-coding transcripts and are typically associated with translational repression of the downstream primary open reading frame (pORF). Interference with uORF activity provides a potential mechanism for targeted upregulation of the expression of specific transcripts. It was previously reported that steric block antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) can bind to and mask uORF start codons to inhibit translation initiation, and thereby disrupt uORF-mediated gene regulation.

Introduction/aims: A previous randomized controlled trial showed that guided self-help acceptance and commitment therapy plus standard medical care (ACT+SMC) was superior to standard medical care alone (SMC) for improving quality of life (QoL) and mood at 9-weeks post randomization in a sample of people with muscle disorders (MD). This follow-up study evaluated whether these effects were maintained in the longer term alongside individual patterns of response.

Methods: The original study was a two-arm parallel group randomized controlled trial, which compared ACT+SMC to SMC.

A reinvestigation of cognitive styles in sticklebacks: decision success varies with behavioral type.

Behav Ecol

November 2024

Centre for Social Learning and Cognitive Evolution, School of Biology, University of St Andrews, St Andrews, Fife, KY16 9TH, United Kingdom.

The "cognitive styles" hypothesis suggests that individual differences in behavior are associated with variation in cognitive performance via underlying speed-accuracy trade-offs. While this is supported, in part, by a growing body of evidence, some studies did not find the expected relationships between behavioral type and cognitive performance. In some cases, this may reflect methodological limitations rather than the absence of a true relationship.
