Background: Faecal-oral carriage via hands is an important transmission pathway for diarrhoeal pathogens. The level of faecal contamination of commuters' hands in Dhaka, Bangladesh, was examined in this study.
Methods: A total of 900 hand washing samples, including both left and right hands, were collected during one year to cover three different seasons in Bangladesh: winter, summer and rainy seasons. Standard membrane filtration technique was used to quantify total coliforms (TC), faecal coliforms (FC), faecal streptococci (FS), Escherichia coli (EC) and Clostridium perfringens (CP).
Results: The hands of the commuters were contaminated with TC, FC, FS, CP and EC. The TC, FC, FS, CP and EC counts were 1.95, 1.65, 4.04, 1.54 and1.46 log10 colony forming units (cfu) in the left hand; and 2.13, 1.82, 4.11, 1.52 and 1.61 log10 cfu in the right hand, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences in counts of left and right hands. The highest counts were observed for FS in all seasons.
Conclusions: This evidence based study may be used to provide interventions to reduce the contamination of commuters' hands through washing with detergent and, thus, help to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Carbonate radical (CO) is inevitably produced in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) when addressing real-world aqueous environments, yet it often goes unnoticed due to its relatively lower reactivity. In this study, we emphasized the pivotal role of CO in targeting the elimination of contaminants by contrasting it with conventional reactive oxygen species (ROSs) and assessing the removal of sulfamethazine (SMT). Similar to singlet oxygen (O), CO shows a preference for electron-rich organic compounds.

The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) stands as one of the most frequently employed rapid detection techniques for both chemical and biological contaminants. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and hydrogen peroxide (HO), serving as signal generators, play indispensable roles throughout the entire ELISA process. However, HRP and HO exhibit high sensitivity to elevated temperatures, hindering the broader utilization and transportation of ELISA.

Road-associated microplastics, originating from tire wear and fragmented litter, are significant contributors to microplastic pollution. This study examines the characteristics of these particles within a university, focusing on their size, shape, color, and polymer composition. Suspended microplastics were collected using portable active samplers for PM and results have shown that PM concentrations peaked on Thursdays and declined, reaching their lowest levels on Sundays, with overall weekend measurements indicating reduced concentrations compared to weekdays.

Soil heavy metal (HMs) contamination poses significant ecological and health risks, yet the spatial drivers of HMs pollution remain poorly understood. This study integrates pollution risk assessment, positive matrix factorization, machine learning, and multi-scale geographically weighted regression to develop a framework for identifying the spatial drivers of soil HMs contamination risk in Yangtze River New City, China. Analysis of 7152 samples revealed that although average HMs concentrations were below national standards, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, and Ni exceeded local background levels.

The study of the co-transport of Cr(VI) and microplastics (MPs) in porous media is important for predicting migration behavior and for achieving pollution removal in natural soils and groundwater. In this work, the effect of MPs on Cr(VI) migration in saturated porous media was investigated at different ionic strengths (ISs) and pHs. The results showed that pH 7 and low IS (5 mM), respectively, promoted the movement of Cr(VI), which was further promoted by the presence of MPs.
