We report six cases of Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi A infections in travelers returning from Myanmar. In 2015, 31 cases of paratyphoid fever were reported in Japan, and 54.8% of those traveled to Myanmar. Among them, six patients presented to our hospital. They had traveled to Myanmar from July 2014 to August 2015 for business purposes. All six isolates were phage type 1, and they were resistant to nalidixic acid.

Enteric fever is one of the important causes of tropical fever with a prevalence of 11-21 million cases worldwide annually. It encompasses both typhoid and paratyphoid fever. Background/objectives: Typhoid and paratyphoid fever together are responsible for millions of cases and thousands of deaths per year, most of which occur in children in South and Southeast Asia. While typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs) are licensed, no vaccines are currently available against Paratyphi A. Here we describe the design of a Paratyphi A conjugate.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated trends and spatial patterns of typhoid and paratyphoid fever (TPF) in Yunnan Province to inform better prevention strategies.
  • From 1989 to 2022, there were over 206,000 TPF cases, peaking in July and August, with the highest incidence in the 25-34 age group and among farmers.
  • Results indicated a significant decrease in TPF incidence, with specific high-incidence areas identified, suggesting that prevention efforts should target these hotspots and seasons.

Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong Province, China.

Background: Typhoid and paratyphoid fever, collectively known as enteric fever, are systemic infections caused by Salmonella enterica and are highly prevalent in children. We aimed to describe the global burden, trends and inequalities of enteric fever among children under 15 years from 1990 to 2019 based on data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 (GBD 2019).

Methods: In this secondary analysis of GBD 2019, we extracted data for incident cases, deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) as measures of enteric fever burden.
