Primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma (PMPM) is a rare tumor with poor prognosis. Surgery is the treatment of choice, but numerous cases are inoperable. For the treatment of inoperable or metastatic cases, systemic chemotherapy is required. However, a standard chemotherapeutic regimen for the treatment of pericardial mesothelioma has not yet been established. Chemotherapy involving pemetrexed and cisplatin has been actively used in the treatment of pleural or peritoneal mesothelioma, and may be considered for the treatment of PMPM. The present study reports the case of a patient with PMPM with lung metastasis who demonstrated a positive response to treatment with pemetrexed and cisplatin followed by pemetrexed maintenance chemotherapy, leading to prolonged progression-free survival for 21 months.

Primary pericardial mesothelioma is a highly aggressive and rare neoplasm that arises from the pericardial mesothelial cell and has a poor prognosis. The diagnosis is usually established by histological and immunohistochemical studies. Malignant mesothelioma most frequently occurs from the pleura (90%), less frequently from the peritoneum and pericardium (6%-10%), and very rarely from the tunica vaginalis in the testis.

Neoplasms are only sporadically reported in New World primates and rarely in owl monkeys (), specifically. Previous reports of neoplasms in owl monkeys are primarily restricted to lymphoma induced by infection, although other tumors in the central nervous, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems have been sporadically reported. Herein, we describe 3 previously unreported neoplasms in owl monkeys () including a pericardial mesothelioma in a 6-year-old male, a nephroblastoma in a 2-year-old male, and a cervical neoplasm with characteristics of an epithelioid trophoblastic tumor in a 4-year-old female, all occurring in the same closed breeding colony at a research facility in central Texas.
