Most often, gait biomechanics is studied during straight-ahead walking. However, real-life walking imposes various lateral maneuvers people must navigate. Such maneuvers challenge people's lateral balance and can induce falls.

Photonic modes exhibiting a polarization winding akin to a vortex possess an integer topological charge. Lasing with topological charge 1 or 2 can be realized in periodic lattices of up to six-fold rotational symmetry-higher order charges require symmetries not compatible with any two-dimensional Bravais lattice. Here, we experimentally demonstrate lasing with topological charges as high as -5, +7, -17 and +19 in quasicrystals.

Probability of lateral instability while walking on winding paths.

J Biomech

November 2024

Department of Kinesiology, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802 USA. Electronic address:

People with balance impairments often struggle performing turns or lateral maneuvers, which can increase risk of falls and injuries. Here we asked how people's mediolateral balance is impacted when walking on non-straight winding paths. Twenty-four healthy adults (12F / 12M; 25.

Article Synopsis
  • Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM), also known as creeping eruption, is an infection caused by hookworms that affects the skin, particularly on the lower legs.
  • *It presents with unique red, winding lesions that appear elevated, primarily diagnosed through clinical observation.
  • *Treatment often includes topical and oral medications like ivermectin, albendazole, and thiabendazole cream.

We analyze the transitions between established phases of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) by surveying the daily data of the southern oscillation index from an entropic viewpoint using the framework of stochastic statistical physics. We evaluate the variation of entropy produced due to each recorded path of that index during each transition as well as taking only into consideration the beginning and the end of the change between phases and verified both integral fluctuation relations. The statistical results show that these entropy variations have not been extreme entropic events; only the transition between the strong 1999-2000 La Niña to the moderate 2002-2003 El Niño is at the edge of being so.
