Zhang et al interpret the mixed-layer energy budget in models as showing that "ocean dynamics play a central role in the AMO." Here, we show that their diagnostics cannot reveal the causes of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and that their results can be explained with minimal ocean influence. Hence, we reaffirm our findings that the AMO in models can be understood primarily as the upper-ocean thermal response to stochastic atmospheric forcing.

There has been much interest about how to identify an ice core signal for oxidizing capacity of the troposphere. This study broadly explains the air-snow transfer/deposition process using ice core records of dicarboxylic (DCAs), ω-oxocarboxylic as well as pyruvic acids and α-dicarbonyls, which are potentially formed by atmospheric oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons from the continent, incloud-oxidation of isoprene and unsaturated fatty acids from the western North Pacific. An ice core (~152 m long, 304 years) was collected at an ice cap on the Gorshkov crater at the summit of Ushkovsky (56° 04'N, 160° 28'E, altitude: 3903 m) in the Kamchatka Peninsula from southeastern Siberia.

Understanding storm impacts on marine vertebrate demography requires detailed meteorological data in tandem with long-term population monitoring. Yet most studies use storm proxies such as the North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAOI), potentially obfuscating a mechanistic understanding of current and future risk. Here, we investigate the impact of extratropical cyclones by extracting north Atlantic winter storm characteristics (storm number, intensity, clustering and wave conditions) and relating these with long-term overwinter adult survival of three long-lived sympatric seabirds which winter at sea-common guillemot Uria aalge, Atlantic puffin Fratercula arctica and razorbill Alca torda.

Here, an annually resolved absolutely dated Juniperus saltuaria tree ring width chronology from the Haizi mountain, southeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) was developed. Understanding long-term temperature variability in the Upper Indus Basin (UIB), northern Pakistan, and its driving mechanisms is challenging due to the scarcity of long observational records and available literature. In this study, we reconstructed a 651-year (1370-2020 CE) warm-season (March-September) temperature record using the tree-ring maximum latewood density (MXD) of blue pine (Pinus wallichiana). The reconstruction explains 57 % of the variance in actual temperature during the common calibration period (1972-2020 CE).
