Optical design and fabrication techniques are crucial for making optical elements. From conventional lenses to diffractive optical elements and to recent metasurfaces, various types of optical elements have been proposed to manipulate light where optical materials are fabricated into desired structures. Here, we propose a scattering optical element (SOE) that exploits multiple light scattering and wavefront shaping. Instead of fabricating optical materials, the SOE consists of a disordered medium and a photopolymer-based wavefront recorder, with shapes impinging on light on demand. With the proposed stand-alone SOEs, we experimentally demonstrate control of various properties of light, including intensity, polarization, spectral frequency, and near field. Due to the tremendous freedom brought about by disordered media, the proposed approach will provide unexplored routes to manipulate arbitrary optical fields in stand-alone optical elements.

Currently, the development of red Mn-activated fluoride luminescent materials attracts a lot of attention in optical thermometry sensors, solid lighting, display, and plant growth areas. Nevertheless, the thermal stability of Mn-activated fluoride luminescent materials is still a crucial issue. Herein, a new red RbNaVF:Mn luminescent material with outstanding thermal stability was successfully synthesized through the facial coprecipitation method.

The practical implementation of terahertz (THz) imaging and spectroscopic systems in real operational conditions requires them to be of a compact size, to have enhanced functionality, and to be user-friendly. This work demonstrates the single-sided integration of Fresnel-zone-plate-based optical elements with InGaAs bow-tie diodes directly on a semiconductor chip. Numerical simulations were conducted to optimize the Fresnel zone plate's focal length and the InP substrate's thickness to achieve constructive interference at 600 GHz, room-temperature operation and achieve a sensitivity more than an order of magnitude higher-up to 24.

Eye-tracking technologies are emerging in research aiming to understand the visual behavior of cyclists to improve their safety. These technologies gather real-time information to reveal what the cyclists look at and how they respond at a specific location and time. This systematic review investigates the use of eye-tracking systems to improve cyclist safety.

Novel therapeutic delivery systems and delivery methods to the inner ear are necessary to treat hearing loss and inner ear disorders. However, numerous barriers exist to therapeutic delivery into the bone-encased and immune-privileged environment of the inner ear and cochlea, which makes treating inner ear disorders challenging. Nanoparticles (NPs) are a type of therapeutic delivery system that can be engineered for multiple purposes, and posterior semicircular canal (PSCC) infusion is a method to directly deposit them into the cochlea.

In this study, the melt pool formation behavior of high-speed laser-arc hybrid welding of aluminum plates was simulated using finite element analysis (FEA). To evaluate the heat input efficiencies of the laser and arc, standalone laser or arc welding experiments were conducted using the same arc or laser processing parameters as those employed in hybrid welding. These experiments were also simulated using FEA to calibrate the laser and arc heat adsorption parameters.
